Starretts gone by the wayside and are riding the coat tails of their past.
Comparison to Mitutoyo for versatility
I'm not a fan of gauges like this when you can get a mitutoyo multi anvil micrometer and have a more versatile tool for about the same cost.
Inflated prices on resale platforms
Don’t pay the inflated Brownell’s price, this is really just a starrett 207z can-seam micrometer, made for measuring can seam heights.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion about tool specifications and features
Do these have carbide faces and tenth readings? Can't quite see from the pictures.
Thats a great set of mics! I'd be interested if I didn't already have 0-11.
The second picture shows the tenths graduations along the barrel.
Comments on the relevance of 'round shaft' terminology
It seems superfluous to say "round shaft". Are there any shafts that aren't round? 🤔
Discussion on interchangeable micrometer frames
I was wondering if I could just buy the frames and attach a digital micrometer head.
Nope, the closest you'll get is interchangeable anvils.
You use micrometers to verify that parts are up to spec.
If it was a good idea, don’t you think someone would be selling it?
Clarification on reversible protractor head feature
If anyone has a reversible Starrett protractor head, I'd greatly appreciate some clarity.
Absolutely not at all what I initially thought. Glad I have gotten it all straightened out and that I can finally unpackage it all and start using it.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion on the specific use cases for micrometer heads
I was going through my grandfathers tools and found this tool and was wondering what it was used to measure.
looks like some height setter micrometer, maybe for a line boring tool or a boring head.
Sentimental value of inherited tools
The fact that the original parts are still together is cool and all, but the micrometer doesn’t function… it barely turns.

Discussion on maintaining and lubricating micrometers
Starrett instrument oil..but first gotta free it up, penetrant oil soak and slow working of the instrument to prevent thread damage or seizure.
Check out Adam Savage Tested on YouTube. He showed how to disassemble and lubricate them.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Negative reviews could lead to trolling behavior.
Knowing the internet this is just going to invite trolls to make further 1 star reviews lmao.
Fans care more about hits than players do.
I often see the sentiment on this sub that fans care more about hits like this than the players, and sometimes that's true.
Discussion on the perception of head injuries in hockey.
hopefully he’ll be more careful with his play and other people’s noggins.
Debate over the nature of hits and head injuries.
Let's not make light of the danger of this hit, but let's also not crucify a guy trying to do what got him to this point in a career.
Discussion on the perception of head injuries in sports
The irony in this missed call: The Rams sent proposals to the competition committee in each of the last 3 years to make penalties on facemasks to QBs, blows to the head and roughing the passer reviewable.
on a QB, it would still be a blow to the head and roughing the passer, which is basically the same penalty.
A blow to the head requires the contact be 'forcible' which is still subjective though.
Player B was the only person to receive a penalty.
Discussion on head injuries and protection
Super Earth has determined that additional head protection is not needed since no head injuries have been reported.
One shrieker ran off with my helldiver head the other day.
Well then its a lack of neck protection not head protection.
other than that I've landed on my head a few times after being launched like team rocket.
Discussion about VAR decisions in football
VAR reviewed the situation and deemed no action was necessary.
Every game when someone scores at city can they go find haaland and throw the ball at the back of his head?
Discussion on alternative brands like Mitutoyo
I always rooted for starret, but they're really not making a great case for themselves.
Sylvac. Best on the market.
Discussion on alternative micrometer types
I was seeing some starrett micrometer heads on ebay for dirt cheap and I'm tempted to attempt making something similar as a fun project.
Does anyone know where I can find a micrometer like this?
Never seen one exactly like this tho.
Historical significance of Starrett tools
Can anyone help me date my recent find?
Most impressive.
Dating tools based on design features
hard to put an exact date, but i would guess around 1930 to 1940, because of the that knob design with the rounded knurled double rows.
Discussion about the retention of the crystal on vintage Starrett calipers
I got some vintage Starrett calipers in great shape but there appears to be nothing keeping the crystal on the dial in.
That old butyl plastic deformed and or shrunk a bit.
Its held in like most watch crystals.
I'm planning to lock it in place with some sort of epoxy or glue since I don't think there's enough head space in the undercut groove for a snap ring.
Discussion on identifying vintage Starrett micrometers
Recently picked up a bunch of vintage Starrett tools at an estate for less than 20.00 all in.
End measure micrometer.
I know it's some sort of micrometer for measuring the the inside of a pipe or cylinder.
looks like a micrometer head.
