What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Mitutoyo maintains high-quality instruments
Mitutoyo is still putting out the great instruments they always have.
How is the body attatched to the head?
I notice, however, how relatively inexpensive the manual analog ones are.
Good value for the price
I picked up this Mitutoyo micrometer up at a flee market for $8, it is still sealed in its plastic packaging.
$8 for it, I'd think you got a steal especially since it's still in package.

Mitutoyo micrometers are reliable
I know a digital one is probably better but I don't trust them.
Pretty much any mitutoyo micrometer would be a good one.
Precision of .0001" is beneficial for certain tasks
that model was my go to at work where I'm often going in the +-.001"
Digital micrometer provides quick and easy readings
quick and easy to read, taking multiple measurements and writing or typing them is just easier when it's already written out.
It's faster to read, the metric/us unit button is VERY handy.
I like digital. It gives me a number, I'm seeing numbers from print it.
Very glad I got them too, very accurate and repeatability is great.
Inch/MM button is convenient for unit conversion
I can see the Inch/MM button coming in very handy.
the button is handy.
Digital micrometers are faster and reduce misread chances
Digital or analog? Pros and cons
the quickness and cutting down on the chance of a misread when you’re in a hurry is pretty dang nice.
the chances of a miss read are slim to none.
It’s quicker (especially with SPC output in a high volume production environment) and less subject to human error.
Mitutoyo micrometers are highly regarded
Sold. I’ve been eyeing one forever.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Lever is not responsive, causing delays in measurement
it takes too long for the 3 points to extend out to take measurements, makes it hard to use.
Thimble is hard to turn
Thimble is hard to turn.
Someone tried to calibrate it and now the thimble is hard to turn and it dosn't even respond to turning by ratchet.
Overkill precision for some home projects
Unless you are doing unusually precise and complicated work at home, chances are resolutions of .0001" is overkill.
Analog micrometers can be challenging for some users
I can't honestly see ANY benefit to a tool that others have trouble reading.
He said he didn't know how to read it.
It messes him up because he's used to reading right to left on the DRO.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Mitutoyo does not currently offer a small 2" range micrometer head
They will make one for us but I'm still waiting on the quote.
Discussion on the preference for digital over dial calipers
I can also very easily imagine a scenario where being able to "judge" tenths with a set of relatively cheap and fast/easy to use dial calipers could serve a machinist well in the ultimate goal of making on-spec parts in the shortest period of time.
If you've got a part where a difference of 5 tenths is enough to make it go or no-go, then you sure as shit won't be using calipers to take that measurement, you'll use a micrometer with at least 0.0001" accuracy.
Zero function. Allows machinists to work towards zero value instead of having to subtract from starting value.
Usage of micrometers for pass/fail measurement
It's a pass/fail or go/no go micrometer.
go-no go/min-max micrometer
It is a Limit Micrometer

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Curiosity about disassembling for maintenance
Is there some instruction how to dissasemble it correctly? Im terrified to dissasemble mitutoyo cuz of their price :D
Taking the ratchet apart (you won't be able to do that without a tool) will cause a miniscule spring to come flying out of it, though.
Interest in DIY micrometer repair techniques
Does anyone have any information regarding micrometer repair that can be done in house?
It's not Mitutoyo specific but it might be helpful.
In other words the most basic of repairs... And even then the mic may not be accurate.
Curiosity about using audiobook while working
The boredom of pulling the quill down to drill holes, then deburring has been greatly reduced!
Discussion about learning tools for hobbyists
Use painters tape to cover the decimal place maybe?

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Curiosity about older models and their value
What is the purpose of the extra thin anvils?
Curiosity about parts interchangeability
take it apart & try it.
Preference for reliable suppliers like MSC
Msc is where i get my mine, got browne and sharpe and mitutuyo from them.
it is still often the fastest way to get tools unless you have a MSC account with next day shipping.
Still good to check the quality of what you buy.
Discussion on cleaning techniques for maintenance
It’ll be good as new.
i just tried cleaning them as best i could with a rag with iso but is still the same.
The anvils get gummed up.
Squirt a bit of iso on the anvils and work the action a few times, should free up.
Discussion on lubrication for smooth operation
Usually the lubricant gets sticky.
Advice on cleaning and lubrication for maintenance
Can anyone give advice on fixing my Mitutoyo Micrometer that is seized to the point of being stuck?
Twist it open instead of closed
It looks like the thumb lock is missing.
Discussion on learning tools for hobbyists
I'd rather gouge my eyes out than learning another Vernier scale but I need a micrometer.
Concerns about tool usage in home machining
Unless youre doing grinding... theres no need to chase this sort of precision.
Curiosity about users' preferences for digital versus analog
I like digital due to ease of switching for metric but it’s just a calculation away on analog if necessary.
I'd probably introduce students to the use of a vernier calipers before a mic.
Curiosity about the function of the micrometer
A tool and die maker at my work showed me this micrometer. He has had it for a years and does not know what it is used for.
pp inspection...
Used like a snap gage.
Like if you set them at particular sized gaps and locked them? Interesting.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Issues with competitor Starrett's quality control
We want to avoid that. We also don't need the ultimate luxury mic head that feels like the lead screw was lapped by Hephaestus himself.
I'm not a fan of gauges like this when you can get a mitutoyo multi anvil micrometer and have a more versatile tool for about the same cost.
Instead of “1911 slide rail mic”, use “can seam mic” as your search term on eBay.
Concerns about counterfeit Mitutoyo products
I'm looking to buy a real mitutoyo caliper, but I'm leery of most resellers as I know there are a lot of forgeries out there.
Cause he wants Mitutoyo calipers, but not Mitutoyo prices.
Risks of incorrect measurements leading to costly mistakes
A bit late when you have spent a whole year sending undelivered birthday cards, or in a machinists case, by the time you have scrapped a £100 hunk of stock due to an incorrect measurement.
Potential calibration issues affecting thimble movement
If reassembled incorrectly or too tight, it will seize and act stiff.
Discussion about taking the micrometer apart for repair
Last time I used it it worked just fine.
Discussion on fixing a stuck micrometer head
Any suggestion on how I can replace the micrometer head?
Probably get a nice new mitutoyo for 3 bills.
There may be no need to replace anything: just remove the gunk created by people oiling it.
If it's so bent you can't remove it then you might be SOL.
Concerns about calibration and tracking of gages
In our experience, they are used to quickly determine if parts are within spec.
