Snoop's Take

The Shars 0-1" Micrometer Head is a precision measurement tool designed for accurate readings in mechanical and engineering applications. With features like micro lapped oil spindles and precision ground threads, it offers a reliable option for both hobbyists and professionals. Consumer sentiment reflects a mix of satisfaction and caution regarding the Shars micrometer. Many users appreciate it as a decent budget measurement tool, with one stating, "Shars sells decent budget measurement tools." However, there are concerns about its quality compared to higher-end brands, as noted in comments like, "Comparing Mitutoyo with Shars is nonsensical. They are on opposite ends of the scales of both quality and price." Overall, the Shars 0-1" Micrometer Head is recommended for those seeking an affordable tool for basic measurements, particularly for hobbyist use. While it may not match the durability of premium brands, it holds its own in the budget category, especially for users who prioritize cost over top-tier quality.

What can this micro micrometer scale?
Clearly, it's to make sure your feeler gauges are correct thickness.
Shars micrometers may have lower quality compared to competitors
Comparing Mitutoyo with Shars is nonsensical. They are on opposite ends of the scales of both quality and price.
If you're a hobbiest and not stupidly rich or OCD, buy Shars or some other Banggood special.
I just like common batteries.
I’ve found that they’re both great, I’m glad we bought both - I think they’re both good in different ways.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion on micrometer head features and brands
I believe a good shower experience is a game-changer, and who doesn’t love a relaxing shower that has the right pressure and coverage, right?
pressure is high and it's on the bottom of your budget, i think it's currently the best seller on this category and for a good reason.
Moen is considered a reputable brand.
This does seem like a good choice, especially with the rain shower setting.
Discussion of micrometer usage and types
A tool and die maker at my work showed me this micrometer. He has had it for a years and does not know what it is used for.
go-no go/min-max micrometer
Like if you set them at particular sized gaps and locked them? Interesting
This is the right answer.
Discussion on tolerances in measurement tools
I know I'm going to get laughed at, but just how good are these harbor freight calipers?
You usually don’t care much about even if it’s .005 off on checking thickness when your surface planing wood.
if you're worried about tight tolerances probably don't use calipers to begin with.
Their okay for wide open tolerances they get wonky when the battery gets low.

Discussion of alternative brands for micrometer heads
I am actually in talks with Mitutoyo right now but they don't make a small 2" range head.
Sylvac. Best on the market.
Discussion on the usability and preference for various micrometer brands
I really like my Starrett 436, it's easy for my old eyes to read and I really like the thimble feel.
I am a sucker for mechanical digital micrometers like the Mitutoyo 193-211, SPI makes a cheaper metric-only alternative too.
So easy to use and so repeatable. Great feel.
Incredible accuracy if you want to buy a pack to fill your capabilities.
Discussion about alternative brands for micrometer heads
A good middle ground.
Advice to invest in quality micrometers instead of cheap ones
Whats a decent set of inexpensive micrometers? I just finished trade school for machining and was to
If you're making a career out of this, don't cheap out, because you'll have to buy the good set eventually.
Seriously though, don't cheap out on measuring equipment. You'll regret it.
If you have to cut corners, go SPI or Fowler. Anything less is asking for trouble, IMO.
Suggestions for checking measurement accuracy
If it gives you the right measurement I'd say they're good enough.
Just make sure you check it at various points.
Comparisons between hobby and professional tool use
the harbor freight ones feel like shit in comparison, but measure the same as the mitutoyo that cost 10x as much.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Concerns about quality control in competitor products
Starrett heads but their QC seems to have tanked in the last year or so and we scrap almost 3% of our Starrett heads as soon as they're out of the box.
I always rooted for starret, but they're really not making a great case for themselves.
Mitutoyo is still putting out the great instruments they always have.
Concerns about measurement reliability when replacing parts
Probably get a nice new mitutoyo for 3 bills.
There may be no need to replace anything: just remove the gunk created by people oiling it.
If it's so bent you can't remove it then you might be SOL.
Concerns over competitor measurement accuracy
I’ve seen some people say to get gages like Fowler .0001” bore gauge but I’ve seen a few places that say it has a stated error of .0009” which is basically like measuring with a perfect .001” gauge.
As a machinist, most of what I see from Fowler is a low priced copy of something else, dressed up to look like something better.
Seeing that the mitutoyo is a few hundred thousandths of error vs 9 ten thousandths in the cheaper tool makes me feel better.
Discussion about alternative brands for micrometers
Get a Chinese set for cheap and save up for a Mitutoyo set.
Get the china ones for now, but keep saving for Starret (or whatever).
User experiences with battery life and durability
I mean you get what you pay for with these.
they're sacrificial calipers to leave by the saw so you don't fuck up your good ones.
3D printed micrometers may lack accuracy for decent measurements.
I 3D Printed a Micrometer [deleted]
Awesome design study and print, but 3D printed parts are not accurate enough for even a semi decent micrometer.
Wider screws can reduce error in 3D printed micrometers.
Very cool project!
