Positive Feedback

Their goggles are what mostly gets a lot of hate. I made the mistake of buying them when I first started out and the lenses are garbage.

I've done some research on ANSI classifications, and popular helmet brands and have built a list of 3 possible helmets to buy.
The chin straps are underrated. Regular helmets fall off my big ass head when I look up lol.
Good ventilation
I have the Petzl Strato Vent. I love it! My attached ear protection is my favorite part.
Seamless compatibility with other brands
Pretty seamless. No "gaper" gap. I am pleased with the integration.
This is a very helpful comment! I was looking at the Pros on Amazon actually :) thanks!
Affordable option for a decent helmet
Outdoor Master's Kelvin helmet is only half of your budget and it's also a solid choice.
Great airflow and lightweight
GEM MIPS with outdoor master has my vote, its vent has great airflow and very lightweight.
Brand trust and consistent quality
Many of my outdoor gear items are from [Outdoor Master](https://outdoormaster.com/). First I got the electric pump, then the helmet and the glasses.

Goggles quality issues
Their goggles are what mostly gets a lot of hate. I made the mistake of buying them when I first started out and the lenses are garbage.
Lack of safety certification information
I’m not seeing any information on their safety certifications (like ASTM).

You're looking for any helmet that is ECE-rated.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Mention of venting features
The outdoor master pros are very impressive
Discussion about the effectiveness of MIPS technology in helmets
It’s multi-directional impact protection system
Check out the Virginia Tech lab test ratings. The TLDR is that while helpful, a helmet isn’t always necessarily safer than another helmet just because it has MIPS.
Mips is just a thin cloth liner on the inside which makes the helmet slide and transfer energy around instead of forcing all the «crash» energy in one spot
I had a concussion a few seasons ago and realised like an idiot I forgot to do the chin strap up and have always wondered if MIPs would’ve helped, seeing as it wasn’t a particularly forceful impact, or whether it had nothing to do with the helmet at all, and was all due to the chin strap being undone lol
General trust in the brand's manufacturing quality
don't worry
Discussion about the importance of MIPS technology in helmets
Don’t cheap out on something that can save your life.
Evo has a bunch of mips helmets on sale for under 100. They have less features but having mips is important
Smith offers such mips helmet options. But you need to take good care of it, as its foam is easy to get scratched or dented.
Discussion about preferences for lightweight helmets
Best lightweight helmet, Outdoor Master Gem MIPS or POC Axion SPIN

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Importance of trying helmets on for fit
The shapes of helmets vary between different brands, with some being more round and others more oval.
Would have been a nightmare of returns if I hadn't just tried some on at the local shop.
Discussion about safety certification importance
He gets MIPS and CE CERTIFIED Helmet, ie. Helmet for multiple sports.
Look for a Type 2 hardhat/helmet if you’re going that route; it’s certified for impact from all sides and not just the top.
they're not that different. Long term, I'd suggest getting a climbing helmet, because it'll likely be better for the specific activity and more comfortable, but that helmet will be perfectly fine.
Discussion on fitting issues between goggles and helmets
I’ve finally moved away from renting and have bought all of my gear within the past year and at this point I’m not keen on spending another $100+ on new goggles.
I’m thinking about getting the smith mission helmet, but don’t know if it’s a good comfortable fit.
Discussion about helmet fit variations across brands
So I want to buy a helmet directly online and skip the store try-on process.
Comparisons with other helmet brands based on weight and comfort
Price-wise with lighter weight in mind and in the same time ventilated protection and comfort one should try brands away from the established, like OutdoorMaster, for example.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
General skepticism about the brand
the OM one just conforms to my head/ears in a way the others don’t
Thoughts on OutdoorMaster?
Does this helmet do anything?
Skepticism about affordability and safety
I’d say your brain is worth more than 25 dollars. Get a name brand helmet.
No. Not worth the risk. A giro quarter helmet is not much more on Amazon, and you know you're getting something decent.
A LOT of amazon shit is China Knock-Off. Order from your Local Bike Shop or a reputable Online shop.
Concerns over product quality from Amazon brands
Outdoormaster and all the other Amazon brands just white label the absolute cheapest shit they can g
Skepticism about the suitability of non-climbing helmets
Would you use this 3M helmet while climbing? It seems like it would work alright to me.
If it's all my friend has and we're climbing tomorrow, it'll work.
I would recommend getting a proper climbing helmet, one carrying CE EN-12492 certification.
Concerns about using multi-sport helmets for climbing
It's better than a kick in the ass, buy a real climbing helmet, which saves your life, is only like $50.
Concerns about helmet durability and safety
Just no. MIPS is a slippery liner inside the helmet designed to reduce rotational injuries. It ha
Durability doesn't matter, helmets break to absorb the energy of a fall.
CDC says replace only after "serious" crashes or helmet damage.
in a big enough crash occasionally the mips itself will break.
Discussion about the importance of helmet fit and safety
Check out Pacific helmets rescue series. They have great protection, fit and comfort and can hold a flashlight.
Skepticism about rental helmet safety and quality
Last time I was talking to friends, they mentioned that the rental helmets might have taken a few hits from other users, which worried me a bit.
I always thought the big brands were better than the small ones... but I scratched the foam of the Smith helmet with my nails after just a couple times.
Mips is completely unproven to provide any benefit at all on snow. It may or may not help if you head his a rock, but the benefit of a slip plane when you head contacts slippers af snow and ice is absolutely unproven.
Skepticism about affordability and safety of low-cost helmets
Retrospec helmets? Has anyone tried Retrospec helmets before? They're only $25 which seems a bit too good to be true, but the website says they are certified?
Did some mini research and it looks like they’re certified for high impact, but they are **not** multi-impact certified.
All of those certs are the real deal for bike helmets/ski helmets/skateboard helmets for both the US and Europe so there is that
I have one and while I haven’t had an experience where it was needed I read some reviews on it and how it has potentially saved a persons life or saved them from more severe injuries.
