Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Comments on the appearance of the meal
It looks like a condensed-ish stew to me🤷‍♀️🙂‍↔️
Former employee's positive view on the brand
Still have some good friends there so I’m rooting for them - and missing all my freebies!
Inquiry about freeze drying process
How does big companies like Mountain House freeze dry their food? Hello.
I've never dried chili, but have done eggs many times.
They have a factory tour video on Youtube where they show you what they're doing.
They freeze dry the meals in totality. It’s not done by ingredient and then mixed at Mountain House.
Comments on sharing meals and eating habits
Part of the problem is that I'm sharing my meals with my boyfriend who can eat a lot, so we both go hungry.
Having enough food, and the RIGHT food, is definitely key :)
Discussion on freeze-drying process
Costco Food Court Double Chocolate Chip Cookie - $2.49. It's a chonky cookie, good amount of good tasting chocolate.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion about making homemade freeze-dried meals
$1800 would almost cover the cost of a freeze dryer. Then you can make your own.
Discussion about adding extra ingredients for better taste
It's all about having a little something to add to the meal to make it that much nicer.
Exploration of meal preparation methods and personal preferences
Sure enough found a few ranging from $20-40.
Got any dehydrated meal ideas you can throw my way?
Interest in alternative meal options
I haven't tried Huel, but I'm interested.
Discussion about food packing strategies for hikes
Eat all day long. Boil-a-meals are great for getting some warm food in before the temps drop, but you need to get away from the concept of breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Most people over pack food. I'm surprised he doesn't bring enough.

Comments on building a supply of freeze-dried meals
That's a good deal if you're looking to stock up.
Looking for bulk purchasing options
Best price Mountain House Food Looking to stock up on good freeze dried provisions.
/r/trailmeals wiki has a bunch of good brands to check out.
Costco had a 12 pack of mountain house meals recently. It pencilled out to about 6 bucks per meal.
Personally I prefer peak refuel but I think it’s subjective.
Comparisons to other brands and meal types
This. Also ramen, cup of noodles, or even just plain couscous (add your own seasoning) will work.
With the rice sides usually I boil water and fill the pouch then fold the top closed.
Do you use a coosie ? Or however it's spelled. Or just simply pour the boiling water into the Knorrs pouch and let it sit?
I just pour it directly in and let it sit.
General thoughts on basic food stock vs. freeze-dried options
They are intriguing because as of now, I just have basics like rice, beans, oats, etc. which is great, and sustainable to an extent, but I would definitely yearn for a “meal” at some point if I was eating it long term.
General commentary on dehydrated meals versus instant options
FYI, most packets are labeled 2 servings… for me each packet is a single serving.
Change in expiration dates for pouches
Anyone know why there is such a difference in expiration? Also, he had some Wise meals with just a manufacture of 2015.
The older ones should be fine for 30 years.
The changed their expiration dates but, not all freeze dried foods last the same amount of time.
Personal experiences with long shelf-life foods
I recently ate p nut butt r that was three years over and I was shocked, and TURKEY spam that was five years over.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Surprising quality of freeze-dried meals
This was surprisingly really good.
Comments on other brands and preferences
Which alpine aire meals do you recommend? I have a bunch of the peppered beef and rice that I like
Discussion about alternatives to Mountain House products
Not always cheaper, but here are a bunch of alternative options:
Easy to make some of your own. Ramen bombs are great, cheap, and light.
Omeals are usually pretty cheap and extremely convenient as you don't have to boil water for them.
Discussion of comparisons to other brands
Check out other brands, too, and sales online.
Concerns about meal taste differences among individuals
Make sure you try them before you decide they are a "meal" -- taste differs widely between meals, and even between people
