Snoop's Take

Mountain House Chicken Teriyaki with Rice is a convenient freeze-dried meal designed for backpackers and campers, offering a delicious combination of chicken, rice, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and vegetables in a sweet and tangy sauce. Many users appreciate the meal's taste, especially after a long day of hiking, with comments like, "compared to their real counterparts, they're OK but after a full day of hiking and you're starving, they're pretty damn good." However, some feedback indicates concerns regarding the meal's overall value, with remarks about its high carbohydrate content and rising prices, as noted by users stating, "the downside to mountain house meals is that they're fucking expensive." Overall, while the product is well-regarded for its convenience and flavor, potential buyers should consider the pricing and portion sizes before purchasing.

These dehydrated meals honestly aren’t bad at all for what they are.

Positive Feedback

I thought the rice sides were good, but a couple years ago they started adding pasta to even those and I can't stand them anymore.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Delicious taste under various conditions
These dehydrated meals honestly aren’t bad at all for what they are.
Great for long-term food storage
That's a good deal if you're looking to stock up.
Convenient and good after a long hike
It depends on how you define 'good'. Compared to their real counterparts, they're OK but after a full day of hiking and you're starving, they're pretty damn good.
Good taste for a backpacking meal
Thanks! Yeah, I snack on clementines, cheese, and larabars throughout the day.
Lightweight and portable
This. Ignore the packaging on freeze dried meals; they're only enough food for one person for the vast majority of people.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Quality declined with added pasta
I thought the rice sides were good, but a couple years ago they started adding pasta to even those and I can't stand them anymore.
High carbohydrate content
The mountain house meals are high quality but they are mostly carbs, which can generally be bought cheaper dried rather then freeze dried.
Price has significantly increased over time
MH freeze dried food has gone up a lot in price over the years, I was wondering if any of you have any ideas for alternatives that are cheaper.
Not ideal for long-term provisioning
Yes for their intended purpose, no for long-term provisioning.
Expensive and salty
anything that's delicious as a stew/sauce type meal normally is decent (biscuits and gravy, chili, etc) -- they're expensive, and pretty salty.
Portion sizes are too small
Yeah, they are obliged to follow the standard set by the USDA for what constitutes a serving.
Too expensive for regular use
So, the downside to mountain house meals (and similar) is that they're fucking expensive.

Experiences with meal preparation for fun
We actually eat freeze dried food as a dinner about once a month for fun and to make it feel like a treat for my kids.
