What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Tasty meal option in outdoor settings
A real meal that weighs almost nothing in the pack and only needs hot water.
These dehydrated meals honestly aren’t bad at all for what they are.
Love MH. 100% my preferred FD brand - whether #10 can or pouches.
My daughter and I love the biscuits and gravy, I mean to the point that we’ll eat that for breakfast just because we don’t feel like toasting an English muffin.
Better rehydration at high altitudes
But when you're up above that nothing rehydrates as well as mountain house.
Nutritious freeze-dried food
It tastes great and is pretty nutritious.
Good for emergency food storage
I think they would be a good thing to have in my prep stock, and ultimately would feel worth it to me if I bought 30-50 worth of them every month or so, then just stowed them away.
Tasty meal option after hiking
they're pretty damn good.
Mountain house biscuits and gravy is the best one of them all.
they just are not enough food.
Convenient for occasional trips
I only do a couple trips a year and always use Mountain House out of convenience.
Eat all day long. Boil-a-meals are great for getting some warm food in before the temps drop.
Frequent sales on Mountain House products
buy what you like if you are going to consume it sooner rather than later :) I am pretty fond of mountain house and they have many sales a throughout the year
Consistent and tasty meals
Mountain House is consistent and tasty.
Mountain house granola with blueberries is in a lot of my buyout bags because it is good cold.
Good flavor variety
This one is actually my favorite.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Too expensive for regular use
The only negative was the cost: $12 for two servings
that's what you're paying for - someone else prepared a meal for you that looks and tastes more or less like what you eat at home
they are obliged to follow the standard set by the USDA for what constitutes a serving
Mountain House 2 person = Real World 1 person
Quality has declined due to reformulation
Shame they reformulated for cost savings back in '17, a lot of recipes suffered for it.
High sodium content
they're expensive, and pretty salty.
Very salty, but very good.
Not suitable for long-term provisioning
Yes for their intended purpose, no for long-term provisioning.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion about alternative meals for camping
This. Also ramen, cup of noodles, or even just plain couscous (add your own seasoning) will work.
With the rice sides usually I boil water and fill the pouch then fold the top closed.
Do you use a coosie ? Or however it's spelled. Or just simply pour the boiling water into the Knorrs pouch and let it sit?
I just pour it directly in and let it sit.
Discussion about using Reflectix to keep meals hot
Without the sleeve, the meals seem to take a lot longer than the package suggests to fully rehydrate.
That is a fantastic idea. Thanks!
Discussion about freeze-drying various items
I like that I do not need to load up with salt, although things do seem saltier for some reason.
Discussion about meal enhancement tips
It's all about having a little something to add to the meal to make it that much nicer.
Mention of using dehydrators for meal prep
Sure enough found a few ranging from $20-40.

Discussion about stockpiling food supplies
Best price Mountain House Food Looking to stock up on good freeze dried provisions.
/r/trailmeals wiki has a bunch of good brands to check out.
Costco had a 12 pack of mountain house meals recently. It pencilled out to about 6 bucks per meal.
Personally I prefer peak refuel but I think it’s subjective.
Discussion about favorite brands
Which alpine aire meals do you recommend? I have a bunch of the peppered beef and rice that I like
$1800 would almost cover the cost of a freeze dryer. Then you can make your own.
Mention of alternative freeze-dried options
Have you tried the MH ice cream sandwiches? Any good?
I like them. (Have you ever had the freeze dried astronaut ice cream?) Just make sure you have some drink to wash it down with.
Discussion about cheaper alternatives to Mountain House
Not always cheaper, but here are a bunch of alternative options:
Easy to make some of your own. Ramen bombs are great, cheap, and light.
Omeals are usually pretty cheap and extremely convenient as you don't have to boil water for them.
Discussion about evaluating meal suitability
Make sure you try them before you decide they are a "meal" -- taste differs widely between meals, and even between people
Mention of other brands for comparison
Check out other brands, too, and sales online.
Comparison with other brands
Best tasting ones I have ever had are Peak Refuel.
I think it’s an excellent product and great for camping.
They have a bunch of different meals that meet different dietary needs.
Discussion about food preparation methods
I haven't tried Huel, but I'm interested.
Discussion about expiration dates of freeze-dried foods
Anyone know why there is such a difference in expiration? Also, he had some Wise meals with just a manufacture of 2015.
The changed their expiration dates but, not all freeze dried foods last the same amount of time.
Discussion about packing extra food for trips
Most people over pack food.
Having enough food, and the RIGHT food, is definitely key :)
Discussion about food storage and preparation strategies
Awesome! Love to see data-driven prep decisions.
I love a good data spread sheet. Figuring out costs per calorie is awesome.
Curiosity about different packaging options
what would be the use of getting the cans over the individual 2 serving packs?
Discussion on different brands of freeze-dried food
Mainly Augason Farms & Emergency Essentials, with some Mountain House, Ready Hour & others.
Discussion about food pricing for long-term supplies
I’m seeing that ON SALE it would cost me $25,000 for a 12 month supply of food for my family of 4… I can’t do that.
Get a freeze dryer and make your own.
We got a harvest right and love it.
It’s way cheaper just to buy your own freeze drier than to buy in bulk already dried foods.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion about favorite meals
My favorites were the breakfast scramble.
Yep, I live on the stroganoff, lasagna and spaghetti MH on backpack hunts.
This. Also lasagne.
Chicken and dumplings is also way underrated
