Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Success rate of tire repairs varies
Cust doesn’t trust plugs and patches. Paid for a new tire.
Well.. their success rate is not 100%, but that puncture is about as good as it gets for being repairable.
They say it’s not 100% but I’ve used these plenty of times and they have worked 100% of the time for me.
If a random tire can fail so can a patch.
Discussion about trust in tire repairs
well at least the customer gets a new tire and feels safe and someone who's broke as fuck gets a good tire that's patched up and safe
And as any tech knows, anything brand new off-the-line is not 100% either.
I guess tire plugs are like condoms. When enough idiots try to use something, there are bound to be some failures.
Casual mentions of personal experiences with tire repairs
I work at a body shop and have had to plug a few of my tires on my personal car due to shit in the lot lol.
I've plugged my car's tire (singular) about 3x now and it's doing great.
I am no expert, but I have patched both in the past. It didn't seem to have any effect either way.
thanks! I check the pressure a few times a week to make sure it won't blowout on me
Concerns about tire repair safety
Is it safe to drive on a long 800mi round trip? Like the title says, I’m going on a road trip from LA to Vegas and back.
It's a roll of the dice. I wouldn't risk it for two reasons: my personal safety and the safety of everyone else both in the car with me and the people driving beside me on the highway.
The tire flexes more from the outer groove to the side wall. This is why patches don’t hold out there. Can you drive in it, sure. Will it go flat, maybe. Is it safe, who knows.
As some one who did over 10 years in the Tire Center at Costco this is definitely not recommended.
Discussion on the effectiveness of tire plugs and patches
Any plug by itself is merely an emergency fix to get you to a repair shop for a more permanent repair.
it needs to be properly repaired with a patch added.
My plug ‘closer to the sidewall’ failed badly. No accidents but never again.
I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be repaired.
Personal experiences with tire repairs
That's not a pluggable area, and should never have been plugged.
Debate on the permanence of tire plugs
Some said it was and some say it isn't I figured we'd let democracy decide.
It’s permanent until it’s not.
Nothing is more permanent than a temporary fix.
But if youre talking about the kind that are a rubber "tube" with a flat patch connected to it, where you remove the tire from the rim, pull the tube part thru the hole, roll the pizza cutter type tool to flatten the patch on the inside, then put a layer of rubber cement over the patch, then yes that is a permanent repair.
Discussion on professional tire repair limitations
If it's outside this zone it can't be patched professionally
No it cannot, and all of us are tired of answering the same question
General chatter about tire repair safety and effectiveness
Thanks for posting on /r/MechanicAdvice! This is just a reminder to review the rules.
Patches are considered a more permanent fix than plugs
Repairing a puncture: plug vs patch? Apparently a lot of people just plug it and drive like that.
A patch is a more permanent, stronger fix.
Plugs can be effective but are seen as temporary solutions
Plug is temporary. Patch is proper
If possible, patch. Ive run with a rope plug for quite a few years without issue. I have also had them start leaking too.
Concerns about the effectiveness of plugs versus patches
Plugs often leak where patches shouldn’t at all if done properly as well.
Patches are better for holding air and plugs are easier and do a better job of keeping junk out (a patch is on the inside of the belts, and without something in the hole the steel belts can be exposed to air and moisture).
Personal experiences with plugs holding up over time
I’ve personally never had a plug leak on me.
If the plug fails, the tire slowly leaks.
Debate on the safety and reliability of tire repairs
It's never ever in a million years going to cause a blowout like people seem to think.
Never had a problem with any plug, even near the sidewalls.
