Discussion about various rangefinders and their features
Can’t use it in tournaments …
I've told the Mrs that this is what santa needs to know about me.
Only time a range finder is better when hitting way uphill or downhill.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Looking sleepy can make you seem less of a threat to others
So if others see you, you look sleepy, and therefore less of a threat.
Exploring other brands and models in the spotting scope market
Vortex Crossfire vs Diamondback 10x42 As simple as it says, which would you recommend and why, given the price difference?
The Diamondback is lighter and dimensionally smaller. But still heavy enough that it is not too shaky for me.
Difference between those 2 is huge, mainly in terms image quality - sharpness, chromatic aberrations, focus, depth of field, color fidelity, contrast etc.
depending on what you’re using for you can’t go wrong either way. my binoculars are for birding considering the extra 5’ field of view on the diamondback i wouldn’t choose the crossfire
Users often need to increase budget for quality spotting scopes
Ideally under $250 but up to $300 if something tickles my fancy.
If you want a spotting scope for a thousand yards you are going to be paying at least twice your maximum budget listed.
Recommendations for other brands and models
I like it a lot, but I haven't had much experience with anything nicer.
it's an excellent scope. For $400 you're getting a good quality spotter with a first focal plane MIL reticle.
The optical performance is surprisingly good for the price.
Discussion on budget options for spotting scopes
Best budget spotting scope for around 200-400$ ?
The most bang for your buck is buying used.
Vortex Diamondback $259
Comparison to more expensive models
I could see an expensive one like Bushnell being way more precise in terms of putting one centre mass in a deer from 200 yards.

Cautionary Callouts

Thrilling experience of birdwatching
Quetzal trough spotting scope
Resplendent quetzal. Gorgeous. Nice capture
Great spot OP. As an Englishman I was absolutely thrilled to see one of these 5400 miles away from home. It's such a magical feeling that will stay with me forever. Treasure this moment.
I was able to see them on a hike in panama. Not only are they a rare bird, but they are super shy, and you have to be quiet on the trail. If there are other people hiking on the trail that are loud and talking, you won't see them.
Critique of using a camera as a spotting scope
RIP Canon.
It seems a lot more cumbersome and delicate than binoculars or an actual spotting scope.
Came here to type this.
*using it as a spotting scope.
Discussion about the challenges of using spotting scopes and binoculars for stability
I have a very hard time using a spotting scope because I can’t stay still.
A handheld 10x bin will be far stabler than a handheld 20x spotter and probably less stable than a 20x spotter on a good tripod.
I don’t touch the spotting scope and try to give my eye in the box and just move around too much.
binoculars are somewhat more steady than a monocular/spotting scope of the same magnification because (a) the binocular is heavier, and (b) there are more contact points between the optic and your body.
