What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Good starter pack for beginners
It was rather uncomfortable.
No issues at all and overall it’s solid at a reasonable price point.
Good quality and adjustability for growing kids
They run $90 and we've all had good luck with the quality and adjustability.
Good value and rugged design
They are nice packs for the money. Very tough, but that also makes them rather heavy.
Good fit for growing kids
Your son should never need 85L. 50-65L is the range you will probably want to target.
Comfortable in cold temperatures
Both nights I was comfortable. But the colder night wasn't the most enjoyable.
it is comfortable and reasonably warm.
Good for multi-day hikes
I have this pack and it's been solid for my 3-4 day hikes.
High quality and affordable for beginners
TETON makes high quality, affordable packs that are perfect starter packs for backpackers who need to buy a lot of gear on a budget.
I have a Teton scout and it’s served me well.
Durable and serviceable pack
The buckles are on the cheap side but the pack itself is fine.
Good layout and functionality
I still adore my Teton Oasis. It's just about the perfect daypack for me, I cannot stress enough how happy I am with it, especially for the price.
Comfortable for long hikes
Walked 12 miles with it the other day and was comfortable.
Good support for budget backpacking
Either will probably serve you well.
Solid pack for the money
it's a solid pack for the money, highly recommend.
Everything is still great after one time use.
Adjustable torso length for growing users
The adjustable torso length makes it easier to switch bags between users as well as growing with one user.
Good design with multiple pockets
I like it.
Really well designed pack.
Affordable option for budget-conscious buyers
Honestly, under $120 after shipping and taxes.
Budget pack that I got for less than $60, one main compartment with side mesh is nice, plus the lid compartments are plenty big for stuff I need quickly (snacks, tp, first aid, etc).
Good upgrade for light to medium conditions
While they might look similar and boast similar features, the Gregory will always be more comfortable.
This is only gonna be used for week long hikes at the most.
I have the scout 4300 and it's a great pack.
Good entry-level backpack with features
It's a great entry-level bag - by that I mean it's competitively priced to get you into the realm of backpacking and offers a lot of storage options and features from which you will benefit.
Strong material quality
good strong material

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Heavy and uncomfortable
teton sucks and will injure your back.
Not warm enough for stated temperature ratings
I sleep cold, and I have the Teton 0 degree bag you mention.
Not suitable for all types of hikes
That’s not a good pack for anything but it’ll do the job, I’m sure.
Potentially too large for shorter hikes
IMO, that is a huge pack. I hike with a 46L pack and most of the time it's only 2/3 full at most.
Belt strap construction issues
Thanks! What do you mean the belt strap is not well constructed, is it uncomfortable?
Can lead to over-packing
I carry way to much extra shit just because I have the space.
Nylon webbing slips while hiking
The only real complaint ive heard is the nylon webbing slips while hiking , so you have to keep tightening them throughout the day.
Waist buckle issues
the bad thing about the tent? Weight.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion about Teton sleeping bags' insulation and compressibility
My last bag didn't compress down well at all so I think that's pretty important to me
I bought a 0 degree Teton Leef sleeping bag last year for a backpacking trip and it was so well insulated that I didnt realize how cold it was in my tent until one night I got really thirsty and grabbed my water bottle which was almost cold enough to freeze.
Are you able to compress it down pretty small still?
It can be somewhat compressed but I wont lie it's still a bit on the big side.
Discussion on importance of main gear for hiking
But don't forget, the big 3 are the most important pieces of gear: shelter, sleep system, and pack.

Different use cases for summer camp versus backpacking

Debate on the necessity of spending on backpacks for children
You shouldn't spend much on a pack at that age for scouts.
If he is going to be doing some actual backpacking in the next few years then I would get him a well-fitting pack.
The Ozark Trail backpacks at Walmart are perfect.
Comparison of child backpacks from different brands
Neither tent we have is ultralight and it would just be a lot for him to manage in a backpack.
Discussion on the brand's reputation and value
Has anyone ever used a Teton Pack before? I have a friend who swears by this brand and the price point seems too good to be true.
Please do not get the Amazon basics version. Its a blatant rip off of Teton's design.
Considerations for choosing pack size for specific hikes
Would the Teton Sports Scout 3400 be a good pack for a Rim2Rim2Rim hike? I already have this pack and was wondering if this would be a good pack for my trip next year, perhaps it is too small?
Comparison of backpack brands
I love those colors on the Kelty! I used them for my starter gear many years ago and it is still in great shape.
Discussion on choosing pack sizes
kind of leaning towards the scout 3400 mins you i’m a rookie i haven’t really done back packing but have enjoying camping in general.
Discussion on budget-friendly gear for scouts
the nylon material seems to be the same quality as some of the other packs I've seen by more well-known manufacturers.
It's not the fanciest, but definitely good enough and I'd trust it much more than Ozark Trail.
Comparison of different backpack brands
This is the specific pack if anyone is curious: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Ozark-Trail-65L-Stavern-Backpack/439340035
Discussion on appropriate pack weight for youth scouts
Good luck, enjoy the experience and pass your old gear on when it’s too small.
Consideration of gear types for hiking trips
Yeah im thinking his spare clothes, sleeping bag, pad, mess kit, headlamp, fire starting kit, rain gear.
Comparison to other brands for children's backpacks
Osprey has the [Ace line of backpacks](https://www.osprey.com/us/en/product/ace-38-ACE38_395.html#pdp-feature-item-8) for kids. 38 and 50L.
Discussion on transitioning from car camping to backpacking
my current gear would be nowhere near capable enough for a 3 day+ backpacking trip as I have a REI Flash 22.
Comparisons to other brands and models
Check on Sierra Trading Post. I got a Gregory Savant 58L pack there for $97 earlier this year.
Debate on alternatives to TETON gear
Unless you are preparing for a trip that is happening sometime soon, there are ways to get better gear for the same price.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
User experiences with Teton sleeping bags in various temperatures
does not need to be anything crazy but need something better than these Coleman bags from Target that are barely better than sheets
User experiences with different backpack brands
Am deciding between Teton Hiker 3700/ Sports Explorer 4000 vs Mountaintop 60L for my one month backpacking trip in South America.
Honestly for a month long trip, I would invest in a better pack.
