Snoop's Take

The Lowrance HOOK Reveal 5 SplitShot is a 5-inch fish finder that leverages advanced CHIRP sonar and DownScan Imaging to light up fish on your display while offering preloaded high-detail US inland maps. It provides users with both high-resolution imaging and extensive mapping, designed to help anglers pinpoint their catch with ease. User sentiment is a mixed bag: while many applaud its simplicity and performance with comments like “works really well in kayak for me,” others caution potential buyers about the underpowered splitshot transducers, noting that “if you get Lowrance, I highly recommend NOT getting any model with the tripleshot/splitshot transducers.” The feedback hints at a reliable overall performance paired with a critical view on certain transducer capabilities, and the interface is highlighted for its ease of use and straightforward installation. In conclusion, the Lowrance HOOK Reveal 5 SplitShot stands out in its category for high-detail mapping and intuitive sonar imaging, making it a solid recommendation for anglers despite some concerns raised over transducer performance.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion of mapping and contour capabilities in fish finders
Hummingbird calls it auto chart and Garmin calls it QuickDraw contours.
To add to this, Lowrance calls it Genesis Live.
I'd like to be able to save the maps, or just the data (I'll convert it to a file that's readable in google earth with a script), so I don't have to be dependent on the fish finder to access the map.
The more passes you make over an area the more detailed the contour map.
Sidescan imaging is a game changer
Yes. Yes. 1000 times yes.
I'll never buy a fish finder without sidescan. It is absolutely a game changer, and I think a kayak is an optimal vessel for it.
If you paying the money get side scan you won’t regret it
Side scan is def worth it. Helps you locate structure so much easier.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

Garmin devices favored as budget-friendly alternatives
I'd say that the difference between no fishfinder and a cheap one is bigger than between a cheap and an expensive one.
Adding a battery and cables kinda dampers that for me, I toss my kayak in the truck roll to the nearest bridge, toss it in and go.
They aren’t top of the line but they do a lot in a small affordable package.
The Garmin Striker is a solid pick.
Transducer connection and wiring inspection is recommended
transducer connection good ...not made up, corroded, etc ?
Try a different transducer, if you can borrow one or something.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Surface returns on fish finders are explained as noise from wind and wave turbulence
The returns at the surface are just noise - turbulence from the wind and waves on the water.
This is such an in-depth (no applause please, it was purely coincidental) response.
