Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion on radiator efficiency and sizing
I've already got the radiators (still in the boxes) but not sure I want to go through the fuss of returning them.
Oversizing means you can turn the flow temperature down on your boiler and get the same heat output of a smaller one set to a higher temperature.
There's no real downside to having over the required BTU that I'm aware of - if anything the boiler will be running more efficiently as it doesn't need to reach peak temperature.
Discussion on radiator placement efficiency
And then realised how inefficient it is to put a radiator exactly where the window is?
Can confirm having moved a radiator from inside the room to by the window - much warmer now!
Discussion on the comfort of hot water heat versus forced air
this is a huge job, and hot water heat is a good quality source of heat that many say feels more comfortable than forced air.
Radiator heat is better for health due to added humidity
Radiator heat is actually better from a health standpoint than central heat.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion on radiator restoration options
Replacing Cast Iron Radiators I tested one of these for lead paint and it came out negative.
They look like this because someone painted them with regular wall paint 50 years ago and then they were heat cycled for five decades.
And radiator heat is the cleanest, most even heat you'll have.
this is the way. Especially since they have ~~high temp~~ spray paint in different colors.
Discussion on radiator repair options
Am I gonna have to replace the whole radiator
The right thing to do would be replace the radiator.
Yeah, that’s the best thing to do.
Driving without it will cause anti freeze to spray all over your engine bay.
Consideration of upgrading radiator styles to baseboards
Hot water heat *is* centralized. You may just want to upgrade the style of your radiators, you could consider switching to baseboards.
Preference for radiant heat over forced air
My last house had radiators and now I’ve got forced air. I really miss having the radiant heat.
Discussion on radiator placement in PC builds
What gives? Is it actually OK to use radiators as intakes for your machine?
There’s no single “correct” setup, it depends on case airflow, fans, cooling solutions for each component, etc etc
That is a great way to think about it, I hadn't considered the air the radiator would have to deal with as an exhaust.
I use my radiator as an intake. Personally I think it’s better that way so your CPU isn’t being cooled with the hot air from your GPU.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Challenges with ductwork installation in older homes
It was a crazy expensive job and the hvac companies I talked to wanted to punch holes in each wall to run exposed ductwork.
Radiant heat is preferred in colder climates
Radiant heat is a different kind of heat… similar to a wood stove.
Temperature regulators can help with radiator heating
Lots cheaper than installing all the ductwork, I'd imagine.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion on radiator cap safety
even I know not to unscrew the radiator cap while the car is running and still hot.
Isn’t it dangerous? Dude is risking his life for a deal.
Popping that cap off is an almost guaranteed hot shower or steam burn.
That's not a good idea. An engine is meant to cool down slowly so parts don't warp or crack.
Discussion on bleeding radiators
I inherited my grandparent’s 1904 home, radiators, and my papa always bled them with the radiator keys in the fall.
The point of bleeding a radiator is to let air out. The radiator should be full of hot water.
Make sure system is off.
In case someone with steam heat reads this post and is confused- steam works differently from hot water radiators.
