Snoop's Take

The DPVR E4 is a PC VR headset built for immersive gaming on the SteamVR platform. It offers a blend of modern tracking with four built‐in cameras and a slick 120Hz refresh rate to keep your virtual world running smoothly. Consumers are divided on this device. Many praise its vibrant display and tracking capabilities with comments like “the Display Port, FOV, weight and 120hz is appealing,” yet a chorus of critics lambasts its outdated hardware design, fixed IPD adjustment, and underwhelming lens technology. Several users have noted issues such as, “Lack of hardware ipd adjustment and no pancake lenses are pretty painful in 2023,” reflecting a significant discontent among tech enthusiasts. The feedback is a live wire of appreciation for performance paired with exasperation over its aging design. In summary, while the DPVR E4 delivers solid performance for budget-conscious SteamVR gamers, its dated optics and design limitations mean it falls short for those seeking cutting‐edge VR experiences. Expert opinion recommends it only for users who can overlook its 2020 tech footprint in favor of compatibility and basic immersive play.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Good tracking and visual clarity
After using E4, overall tracking and clarity are good.
Excellent display and performance with appealing specs (120Hz, wide FOV, light weight)
the Display Port, FOV, weight and 120hz is appealing.
Decent controller ergonomics
they are more than adequate and definitely get the job done

DPVR is a perfectly acceptable headset, if you get it, it'll work fine.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Hardware design shortcomings (missing sensors, sub‐par speakers, poor microphone, fixed IPD adjustment, and difficult sweetspot)
All-in-all, the DPVR E4 feels like a headset that could have done very well in 2019 and maybe even early 2020.
E4 is like the DP version of Quest 2.
Lack of hardware ipd adjustment and no pancake lenses are pretty painful in 2023.
The lack of hardware IPD adjustment or any way to move the lenses is what scares me.
Overpriced and outdated technology
Given its outdated tech plus pretty basic features I think something closer to $299 would be a better price point.
Limited AMD GPU support (max 90Hz)
Lame about the AMD supporting only up to 90Hz but.. not unexpected.
Did they fix AMD gpu support?
Concerns over headset temperature and fan noise
Headset temperature. Fan noise.
Outdated screen technology
I am just extremely disappointed that this headset, in mid 2023, has screen tech from 2020.
Concerns over headset temperature and overall build quality
But they've cut corners. The fan behind the faceplate has nowhere to vent so it heats up.
No adjustable IPD and optical shortcomings (small sweet spot, glare)
I've heard a few negative reviews regarding the optical stack (smaller sweet spot and glare, made worse by lack of lens ipd adjustment) and I wouldn't have much faith in their warranty process.
problem is no IPD ajustment
High price and outdated technology relative to market expectations
It's certainly an interesting addition to the bottom-ish end of the market.
DPVR has been out for a while... but is outdated at this point.
Misleading marketing claims and inaccurate resolution/specification details
Their website is pretty bad and ruins any hope I'd have of this headset.
Cable reliability issues
The first cable was really bad (prone to breaking and on some AMD chipsets it'd cut out), apparently the revised version is better though.
the cable though… eugh
Performance limitations in demanding games
I can get it to stay between 75-80FPS but cannot get it above 80FPS with an RTX 3080Ti and a 12900K.
Lack of adjustable eye relief for optimal lens positioning
after doing it, its wonderful.
Fresnel lens design provides suboptimal visual quality
There is the dpvr e4 black, but thats fresnel with fixed IPD.
But will settle on fresnel lenses which offer a far worse visual experience than wireless artefacts even with a mediocre setup.
Lack of adjustable IPD due to single-screen design
Like the Rift S it doesn't have two screens inside of it, it only has one. So IPD adjustment is practically non-existant.
