Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Custom baby gates offer effective, tailored solutions for challenging stair configurations.
Finally someone with a real solution to the how do I gate this question.
That's a tough stair to block.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Use hardware‐mounted gates on stairs for optimal safety instead of pressure‐mounted or retractable designs.
They are not appropriate for the top of stairs, more room dividers.
My son pressed against it, at 18 months and 32 lbs, and it basically folded over.
I went to a baby/toddler safety first aid class and the recommendation was to use a hardware mounted baby gate at the top of the stairs because it doesn't take much force to bump into a pressure mounted gate so that the gate stops being fully secure.
That and also I wouldn’t want to risk tripping over the bar on the bottom of the pressure mounted gates!
Wall-mounted gate installation recommendations
I have this very sturdy dog gate that comes with screw in brackets to attach it to the wall.
They mount to the wall, and you can use as many or as few of the panels as you need to fit your area.
Place gate at bottom step for optimal childproofing
I would put the gate on the bottom step.
We have 3 of these, one at the bottom of our stairs. Works great!
Ensure secure anchoring into wall studs
I would also recommend making sure the opening mechanism is too high for a kid to reach, they’re crafty and clever and can figure out more than you’d expect.
Our LO figured out when he was about 10 month old that if he wanted to, he could squeeze himself under the gate to get through to the other side.
Adapt installation method for low-clearance areas
Remove that section of trim or 2 small sections for the mount.
I'd recommend one that screws into the wall for the top of the stairs. screw it right through the trim.
Mount one side to trim, other to the wall… don’t know why you’d need 6” to install it.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Pressure‐mounted gates face installation challenges on railings, often requiring customization.
Because of the placement of the railing, you won’t be able to gate straight across without major customization.
I think a retractable gate where you zip tie the hooks to the metal rails might work
Drywall mounting issues and reinforcements for baby gates
If your child is anything like mine, no drywall will survive the 'grabbing at the top and yanking' of an excited and determined 2.5-3 year old.
Toggles & drywall anchors should never be used for baby gates.
Safety concerns regarding baby gate usage on stairs
Renters break their agreements every day to have baby gates.
My dad fell down 3 steps at the bottom of our stairs and broke his neck because he landed badly.
