Heck even a really high end filtering system if their tap water really is that bad would pay for itself in the long run over buying tons of bottled water.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion on water filter media and contaminants
A filter that doesn't add contaminants! I am driving myself mad!
You won’t find one really. Every filter has media and that media is made out of something.
All systems are also made of 100% NSF certified components and media.
Water Filter Guru runs 100 gallons through the systems before taking a sample.
Discussion on portable water filter recommendations
Any recommendations on portable water filters? I’ve looked at lifestraw and sawyer but I see a lot of bad reviews.
Sawyer is great. The filters are compact and filter lots of water
Grayl water bottle is my new favorite, also bring a sawyer squeeze as a back up.
Big fan of the Sawyer squeeze for on the trail and I use the MSR gravity filter at camp.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Mention of alternative water purification methods
if your worried about minerals being removed, well if you’re relying on water to provide minerals, you’re going to have deficiency’s with or without RO
I’m perfectly satisfied with it, but I haven’t used hardly any other gravity filters.
Discussion on water filtration methods and preferences
I'm not sure I like the idea of having to lay down on the ground just to get a drink, and it doesn't let you filter and carry the water with you, but I do like how portable it is.
Sawyer allows you to drink source water on the go away from the source sl sawyer it is.
Yeah - that's why I'm leaning towards Sawyer. I don't want to be stuck only drinking and the source and not carrying water with me from the source.
The sawyer filters attach right to water bottles and are much smaller/easier to pack.

Discussion on the cost and necessity of water purification
Heck even a really high end filtering system if their tap water really is that bad would pay for itself in the long run over buying tons of bottled water.
They are saying they spend hundreds of dollars a month on bottled water. You can get a water filter for less than that.
I’m about to go spend $5 on a caffeine drink when I can make coffee at home. That would be $5 they didn’t have towards purified water.
You can buy a small dispenser that fits on the jug you refill for like $12 at Walmart.
Mention of various water sources and alternatives
Apparently they can’t afford brains either because there are tons of solutions outside of buying plastic bottled water
I think the point is that if the kid is thirsty for water, you shouldn't punish him for drinking it.
I ate fine, it was BEFORE I ran
Any of these are way way better than a Lifestraw. I like the BeFree w/ a container from Hydropak or Conc.
General water consumption practices
I mean 5 bottles of water is kinda a lot.
All is well now, we did it, internets.
you can get a gallon of water every day for less than like 60$ and that's way more than what that kid drinks
Both work great, don’t clog for me on the mountain streams I’m filling from.
General frustration with water filter research
what did you end up getting?
Take a shit in a gallon of water and run it through a lifestraw and im talking so clean it makes any other look ridiculous.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Concerns about the safety of tap water
It's possible their tap water isn't drinkable, even after being filtered with a Brita.
Yeah a water filter doesn’t help my situation. My water comes out brown.
There are two parts to this. The first is that the problem with Lifestraw is they don't really understand how people use filters as a practical matter and they don't really care because actual outdoorsman are not their core market.
Concerns about trustworthiness of water filter brands
It’s hard to know what and who to trust! I only saw two reports from separate companies about the aluminum in Aqua Tru.
Check out Clean Water Revival, they are made for the chemical sensitive and they claim they don’t leach anything.
Sawyer also has an outstanding presence around the world.
Discussion about the effectiveness of boiling water for purification
No way I'd drink that before boiling
Right? That's just step one.
Id say it’s the biggest most significant step. Boiling water isn’t that hard (unless a fuel source is too hard to acquire)
So what will it do in that case that it wouldn't do with turbid water? Real question.
Concerns about contaminants in water beyond boiling
Boiling water wouldn't remove pesticides and and other toxic waste.
>Highly contaminated with...what
Unless your water is contaminated with something like benzene, where it will take more than simple distillation to get safe water.
Discussion on the challenges of water purification methods
Distilling and purifying your own water isn't the wrong choice, just painfully slow and labor intensive if you need a large volume of water for daily living.
You let the mud settle to the bottom, and then take water from the surface and filter that.
Adding a little bit of salt also helps.
Commentary on the perception of water purification efforts
99% of the people commenting on this post would simply shrivel up and die if water stopped coming out of their tap.
