Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Battery charging and swapping discussion
this is a pretty key feature that is easily worth the $50 price difference between brands.
You have a choice of a replaceable rechargeable battery pack or a little cradle for AAA batteries that does in the same spot.
it’s the battery that’s not chargeable once removed as the charging contacts are built into the radio.
You dont need shore power to charge a handheld radio.
Feature highlights: Floating, waterproof, and multifunctionality
if I was on a boat that had lost its electronics or if I had to abandon ship it’s the handheld that I would want with me.
As a bonus, it plays FM radio for when you’re bored & want a belittle background music.
Marine radio frequency and mode differences
You can find a VHF Marine Radio fairly inexpensive on the used market.
Antenna tuning and connection importance
Higher quality radios have protection mechanisms built in.
Some electronics will not survive having the positive connected to negative and negative to positive.
Is that the right kind of antenna for that radio?

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
DIY battery pack rebuild for legacy radios
Rebuild it yourself! That's the spirit of ham radio!
You can use a buck/boost board and make your own battery pack using lithium batteries.
You can try making a NiMh battery pack.

Alternative handheld VHF recommendations
If you want to buy "ahead" I recommend the Standard Horizon HX890.
Straight to trash.
Great info, yes was looking to buy ahead!
It's a solid radio.
Alternative handheld VHF recommendations and general feature considerations
I’m a techie so I like the extra features.
The downside of the larger radios is they can be a bit bulky when clipped to a PFD.
this alone can change your mind from handheld to fixed mount.
Honestly, I quit using my Standard Horizon.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Legacy Uniden model battery discontinuation
Used to love the Uniden Atlantis 250 but they discontinued the batteries for it, so while the 15 year old radio part is still perfect, we can't get the batteries to hold a charge anymore.
Debate over scanning versus transmitting functionality
If your goal is simply to listen in, I would recommend focusing in scanners.
The Baofeng is considered 'the best amateur radio' ONLY because of its price.
Radios are for transmitting they make very poor scanners.
Oh boy.....
