Snoop's Take

Typar Butyl Flashing Tape is a high-performance tape designed to protect structures from moisture damage, particularly effective for joists and deck installations. Users consistently praise its ability to provide effective moisture protection and act as a temporary fix for leaks, with one user noting, "It stopped the leak and was WAY easier to use underwater than the putty goop." However, some feedback indicates frustrations with the tape's application and concerns about moisture trapping, leading to potential rot, suggesting a nuanced user experience with mixed results. Given the positive and negative feedback, Typar Butyl Flashing Tape is recommended for those seeking a reliable solution for moisture protection in construction projects. While many users have found it effective for various applications, potential buyers should be aware of the challenges it may pose during repairs and its limitations on certain substrates.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Effective moisture protection for joists
It also protects the top of the joist from standing water.
the small investment in joist tape to extend the life of the structure can significantly increase the usable life of the deck overall.
Effective temporary fix for leaks
It stopped the leak and was WAY easier to use underwater than the putty goop.
Effective for various applications
The tape is incredible for all kinds of other things so it walks away by the roll at least on the job.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Butyl tape can cause frustration for repairs
That butyl tape will make you hate life when you go to patch it in the spring.
Concerns about moisture trapping leading to rot
I would posit that joist tape salvages the joists and frame of the deck, which will keep the costs down on deck upkeep over the decades.
The copper treating is more reactive with the galvanized nail, which corrodes the nail, loosening the fit, letting in moisture and causing that dreaded squeak.
Some doubt about its effectiveness in extending deck life
Don't think it will actually extend the life of a deck much.
Can complicate future repairs
Water's damn sure not getting in, but next time I need to replace something it's gonna be a week long job 🤣
Tape doesn't stick to poor substrates
my peel and stick flashing isn't sticking to this crappy substrate the original builders used.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Similar products available in pool industry
The tape fix is good. If it starts leaking again, which it probably won't, then do it again.
Mass is required to reduce vibrations effectively
Butyl deadening has enough mass to stop the panels from being able to vibrate enough to cause noise.
Color variations keep things visually interesting
I like how sometimes its green and other times a reddish brown, keeps the day fresh sometimes.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
ZIP tape is preferred for temporary repairs
if you do want a temporary fix, I'd use Zip Tape over something like butyl tape.
the ones that were have at least another decade in them.
Pros prefer tape to avoid spills on job sites
Tape is quicker, easier and safer.
Using flashing tape for tubeless rim tape
2 months and over 450 miles / 725km later, I’ve had no issues.
Recommendations for using a heat gun to improve adhesion
Those made with an acrylic adhesive (ie 3m 8067) should typically be better than the kind formulated from asphalt (bitumen).
Alternative methods being considered for installation
have decided that furring strips with rigid foam between them covered with osb is a better idea.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Patching in winter is possible with proper conditions
Obviously, to get the ice off and driven out of the pores of the membrane.
In my non-professional opinion, it depends on location (both climate and setting).
The wood sitting in the dirt doesn’t seem like a great idea.
Comparison between tape and liquid rubber for sealing
Why are we spending all this money on tape and it’s awkward to apply, when we could just roll on a coat of liquid rubber?
Concerns about compatibility with hookless rims
I’m glad to see PF pros on hookless working well.
Pathfinders are technically hookless compatible but I replaced with tufo thunderos and they seem better.
Concerns about siding installation standards
The wrinkles and using 3 pieces for one vertical column untaped seems sketchy to me but I’m not an expert.
Sadly this is pretty standard for 'siding contractors'...
The only concern I have is the waterproofing at the window.
Not pretty. It should be taped, but if there is an overlap of about three inches that's ok too.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion on tire pressure safety
Hope you didn’t get to badly hurt though!
Thankfully I was able to just swerve into the grass.
Butyl sound deadening may not be necessary with proper insulation
Do you think butyl sound deadening makes a difference under insulation?
I thought about it once again when using pir board this time around and decided not to.
does it make a big enough difference to be worth the hassle and expense?
There is a debate on the effectiveness of butyl sound deadening
You need a lot less of it than you think.
I definitely don't regret spending the money on it!
Concerns about the effectiveness of eternabond for sealing
seems to be a lot of controversy on doing this so I'm wondering if anyone has done this and how it held up?
Reactions to using dicor with eternabond
Was expensive but it sure dosent leak and it sure wont come off unless you really want it to.
Discussion on Tyvek degradation under UV exposure
A whole lot of Tyvek is crumbling *before* the cladding goes up.
Tyvek breaks down badly with UV exposure, to the point where it's not even waterproof after a couple of weeks.
Concerns about moisture trapping with Tyvek over Zip
My understanding is that this will create a water/vapor trap that will eventually lead to problems.
I used to think this was completely pointless, but the more I work with zip the less I trust their marketing.
Debate on effectiveness of Tyvek compared to other materials
Do they fail less compared to Zip?
I think something else that I haven’t seen mentioned is the proclivity for micro plastics to degrade due to microbial activity and even oxygen.
