Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Debate over black sand substrates
Would like to use it for a new 60 gallon, but I've seen so much debate over black sand
Snail survival issues with certain sands
I can't keep any snails alive with that stuff.
Interesting. I have bunch of ramshorn and bladder snails and a handful of assassin snails in there without issue.
Challenges with gravel vacuuming fine substrates
I rather just use some natural gravel or river rocks so I could gravel vac without all the hassle.
Debate over effectiveness of different substrates for plants
Can you give some examples? I’ve been trying to add some live plants to my fresh water tank, but since I have sand, I’m worried that anything besides the Java fern won’t thrive
Add more Java Fern. Sounds like a silly suggestion but there are some amazing aquascapes using only Java Fern.
You can plant in sand with root tabs or if you put dirt underneath the sand
Concerns about using root tabs with sand
Shove some under the sand every few months.
Most aquatic plants dont care what substrate you use, aqua soil is just common with planted tanks because its rich in fertilizer.
