Snoop's Take

The Sportneer Compass Survival Hiking Military Waterproof Lensatic Compass is designed for outdoor enthusiasts, providing essential navigation assistance in various environments. While it features a built-in clinometer for slope measurement and a waterproof design, user feedback has raised concerns regarding its accuracy, with remarks such as, "these compasses are pretty bad to utterly useless if you’re using them for accurate map navigation." Moreover, users have noted issues with air bubbles affecting performance and a bezel that turns too easily, which detracts from the overall reliability of the compass. Despite its durable build and practical design, the consensus among users leans towards caution when using this compass for precise navigation tasks. While it may serve well in survival scenarios, it may not meet the expectations of those seeking high accuracy in navigation. Therefore, prospective buyers should consider their specific needs and the feedback provided by other users before making a purchase.

I want a reasonably high quality compass, well made, but also not too expensive like a one of those high end surveying compasses.

Not reliable for accurate navigation
Late to the party, but they’re pretty bad to utterly useless if you’re using them for accurate map navigation.
To be fair this is a survival compass. Its meant to give you some bearing as to what direction you should travel to find help or safety.
Why is my compass giving a different reading every day?
Air bubble affects accuracy
Test the compass beforehand...keep metal and magnets away from it when using it
Delay in pointing north
Compass, picking a good one Without laying hands on it OR buying an expensive military compass, how do you pick a decent and inexpensive compass?
Low-end compasses have obvious limitations
decent and inexpensive
Countycomm sells a few I trust but the cheap ones are worthless in my opinion.
Bezel turns too easily, lacking resistance
Compass Bezel Very Loose Just wondering but have Brunton Truarc15 that the bezel turns very easily with little resistance.
Thanks. This was just given to me and as I started checking it out noticed how loose things were.
High frequency of bubbles affects performance
We experienced a high frequency of bubbles but trail crew is known for being rough on any and all gear.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Interest in reliable and durable compasses
These button compasses are about the only ones I've found that are reasonably reliable.
Suunto clipper is the only “button” compass I’ve found at a reasonable price with any degree of accuracy and durability.
the longer baseplate on the Ranger is really useful.
Discussion on the utility of survival compasses
I’d rather a shitty compass that came free with my paracord, than no compass at all in a survival situation.
Personal experiences with compass utility
I had better luck terrain associating my way, 11 kilometers at one point.
Once that’s accomplished find a wooded area and practice leap frogging or land mark navigating.
the magnet from the speaker of the radio was affecting the compass.
Discussion about reputable compass brands
Suunto A30 is a solid compass, the Mc-2 is the better compass
Silva Ranger 2.0 or Suunto MC2
Went with Suunto instead. Very well made. MC-2 is an excellent choice.
Suunto A-10 or MC-2. They do everything you need a compass to do.
Personal experiences with compass preferences
It is my experience that, outside external need, there is an inverse correlation between complication level of the compass and actual orienteering skill.
Discussion on trusted compass brands
Silva or Suunto MC series are prob some of the most trusted compasses out there

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion about redundancy in navigation gear
My primary compass is a Suunto MC-2.
If you need to get somewhere in the general direction you'll be okay.
Mention of GPS systems alongside compass use
I already use one, and my mobile phone when signal is available. I always carry a map/compass just in case

Brand new to compasses, and was looking at this one to buy.
Has anybody had any good luck with those tiny compasses?
Getting into it properly this year and want to get a compass.
Mention of other brands/models of compasses
Mine has come along with me for nearly a decade, rolling around my pack summer hiking and winter ski touring, still in perfect shape.
Cammenga lensatic compasses are fantastic.
I like the style of it, but if it doesn't keep a heading, it might not be worth remagnetizing.
Only ones I trust.
Mention of comparing different compass types
First hand land nav experience comparing using the best glide mini button compass with using celestial bodies?
Mention of magnetic declination and its effects
A good compass will let you dial in the local declination so you don't make this oopsie.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Personal experiences with compass usage
I’ve never really used a compass for anything other than teaching other people how to use a compass.
