Snoop's Take

The Shars 0-6" Premium Outside Micrometer set includes six precision instruments designed for accurate measurement in various machining tasks. With graduations of 0.0001" and carbide tips, these micrometers are built for durability and ease of use, making them suitable for both professional and hobbyist machinists. Consumer sentiment has largely been positive, with many users praising the micrometers for their affordability and quality, stating that, "I like Shars tools for the price". Users have noted the accuracy of the measurements, with one saying, "They have been very accurate for me". However, some feedback highlights calibration issues and a preference for higher-end brands like Mitutoyo, indicating mixed feelings among experienced machinists about the set's overall quality. Despite some concerns, the Shars 0-6" Premium Outside Micrometer set is generally recommended for those seeking reliable and budget-friendly measuring tools. This set is ideal for job shop work, offering good value for its price point, making it a sensible choice for many users.

I like Shars tools for the price. I would put them in the same class as Fowler and SPI for quality.

Positive Feedback

the fit finish and feel of the thing is pretty crap.

Def prefer Mitutoyo over Shars.
Quality perception issues compared to other brands
meh...they're okay. Shopping around for a new Mic supplier that isn't China based.
Less useful for some experienced machinists
I don’t think I would have bought that set in the same point in my career.
Concerns about using personal tools in certain work environments
Before you do, ask your work if you're allowed to use your own measuring gear.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion on battery types for micrometers
Comparing Mitutoyo with Shars is nonsensical. They are on opposite ends of the scales of both quality and price.
If you're a hobbiest and not stupidly rich or OCD, buy Shars or some other Banggood special.
Discussion about brand quality perception
I just don't think the gap in quality justifies the price.
I don’t find any of Starrett’s products to be better than BS or Mitutoyo.
Basically starrett for edge finder and any sort of gaging and mitutoyo for mics and indicators.
the old Starrett tools on eBay might be your best bet.
Discussion about the quality of Aerospace and Scherr-Tumico micrometers
A seems nicer as it has a nice looking paint, but S-T is likely better quality since I don't see any plastic parts.
I warned him that it was way too cheap. It's sticky and rough running.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Importance of calibration for micrometers
If I buy cheap I make sure I keep a little set of gauge blocks and every day before I use those calipers or Mics I check them on the gauge blocks to see if they are still good.
To be fair this is good practice no matter the brand.
I’d say any micrometer is a good one as long as you keep it calibrated.
Buying good quality inspection equipment is an extremely worthwhile investment.
Comparison between different micrometer brands
the chinese made mics will measure correctly right out of the box, but what happens 5 years down the road?
Advice against buying cheap micrometers
If you're making a career out of this, don't cheap out, because you'll have to buy the good set eventually.
Seriously though, don't cheap out on measuring equipment. You'll regret it.
This is a screaming deal that you won't regret.
This is not a tool that you want to go with cheapest option.
Suggestions for affordable micrometer options
Get a Chinese set for cheap and save up for a Mitutoyo set.
Get the china ones for now, but keep saving for Starret (or whatever).
Discussion about the importance of calibration
Aren't your mics adjustable? If they're checking .002" out you should be able to adjust them...
Just make sure you check it at various points.
Discussion about micrometer brands and options
Fowler has a decent set of outside micrometers covering 0-4" on Amazon for just over $100.
Comparison between Shars and Mitutoyo
Mitutoyo does make a 2032 battery micrometer now but it’s $350 and I’m just a hobbyist so I can’t really justify that.
The perspective of a hobbyist on micrometer needs
Good to know. Thanks
Discussion about the importance of starting with quality tools for machining.
I am finally learning how to do machining with proper measurement tools, lathes, and mills.
They’re a good step up in quality from the 15-30$ calipers and only 1/3 the cost of mitutoyos.
Insize makes good quality stuff for a decent price.
$180 for the 8” mitutoyo digital calipers wouldve been better from the start, rather than the 4 pairs I bought that each inevitably broke.
Calipers for students should be affordable
most students aren't ready to drop $160 on a pair of Mitutuyo calipers.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
General commentary on measuring tool quality
ask your employer for a measurement tool discount, see if they will pay a percentage of the purchase price.
If it gives you the right measurement I'd say they're good enough.
Mention of calculations related to hole sizes
It hase hole sizes champher calculations and a bunch of stuff.
Discussion about sourcing used tools
Ebay and Facebook are decent for used tools, but know what you're looking at and for.
