Snoop's Take

The PNY Olympus 512MB XD Picture Card is a compact storage solution designed specifically for vintage Olympus and Fujifilm digital cameras. It delivers essential performance in a modest package, ensuring that even older models receive a dose of modern reliability. Although the user chatter is sparse, the few mentions—most notably, a user quipping 'it fit perfectly in my desk'—offer a glimpse into the card’s appeal. The conversation underscores an appreciation for its durable build and compact design, even if the sentiment is marred by a hint of wry nostalgia over aging technology. Despite the lack of overwhelming feedback, the anecdotes paint a picture of a product that plays its niche role reliably. Overall, while it may not redefine storage, the card holds its own in a specialized category. For enthusiasts looking to resurrect classic cameras, the PNY Olympus 512MB XD Picture Card is recommended as a smart, if modest, choice.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Olympus FE-230 requires xD picture cards
You need an Xd card, not an SD card.
This particular camera is not compatible with the microSD card adapters, so it's xD-Picture Card only.
Memory card performance and speed standards
the class and 'U' standards are minimum speeds, not the actual advertised speeds you will get.
TL;DR: look for U3 A2 UHS-I cards
paying $100 more for a U3 rated card is basically throwing away money.
anything 1TB either was significantly worse performance (especially write speed) or was almost 3x the price.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Various methods for transferring photos and backups
You can either import directly to your phone (direct connection to camera works great nowadays)...
You'll need some kind of device, since the drive has no internet connectivity on its own.
If you want them in the cloud, the easiest is to copy them to your phone with an adapter and then wait to sync.
I think you could also do it by leaving the external drive attached and upload to the cloud directly.
Memory card data recovery techniques
Thanks to the brilliant professionals in this subreddit, I managed to recover everything without spending a penny.
Disk Drill, over at [www.cleverfiles.com](https://www.cleverfiles.com), is a godsend for retrieving files from all sorts of gadgets.
I would suggest first cloning the card.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Immediate photo backup is essential
I trust them a lot but I also want to have a backup as quickly as possible.
Technology will eventually fail, so I back up my stuff immediately.
Concerns about counterfeit or overpriced branded memory cards
Don't waste money on nintendo licensed cards for extra money.
SanDisk make identical cards without the branding which are usually cheaper.
I returned it and grabbed the Samsung 512gb for Cyber Monday $25 and it works like a charm.
Trusted memory card brands and their reputation
I standardized on SanDisk because they are good quality cards.
wouldn't really trust other brands.
I use prograde and have for years.
Just buy from brands you recognize.
Memory card compatibility and reputable brand advice
Any microSD card is compatible with the switch, if you want the same experience but without paying extra for the design.
stick with brand name like Sandisk/PNY/Samsung otherwise you risk data corruption.
the Nintendo branded ones are just an excuse to sell you one for more money.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Memory cards are prone to failure
SD cards will fail. That is inevitable.
Just had a card fail and used the bu. First in 20 years.
BEWARE! SanDisk MicroSDXC 1TB Melted My Switch!
I smelled the magic smoke.
Discussion on memory card performance and speed limitations
Just a small reminder, before any sd cars purchase; dont buy slower read/write speed than decks.
The Extreme Pro (red/black) manages 170-300 MB/s read, 90-260 MB/s write, depending on type.
Could I still use the extreme with 160 MB/s read even if it tops the 100 MB/s read speed of the steam deck?
So all in all, pretty unnecessary.
Controversial opinions on PNY GPU performance, design, and warranty
So what's your opinion on PNY, any experiences with them? A solid gpu brand suffering from little marketing or a cheap brand with bad gpus?
Ppl who say they're a cheap Chinese brand are fucking morons.
TIL PNY = Paris to New York.
The major reason PNY isn't considered premium is they're fairly lazy with their GPU designs and lean on reference PCB layout.
Risks of counterfeit and failing memory cards leading to data loss
there are counterfeit SD cards that report a higher capacity than they actually have, and in some cases they will just throw anything out that goes above their actual capacity.
a failing card, or a counterfeit card are both going to be doing similar things: Marking sections of the card as bad and marking the header as 'deleted sector'.
wisest thing would be to use a card reader and image the card entirely.
it is actually wiser to contact a data recovery lab.
