Orthodontic pacifier? Hi Everyone, my sister-in-law who is a pediatrician told me that once baby has teeth (or 6 months) we are supposed to switch to an orthodontic pacifier (flatter shape) to prevent teeth coming in incorrectly.

NUK pacifiers offer a safe, effective orthodontic design

So take this for what you will but my mom is an orthodontist and she told me there really is no such thing as an "orthodontic" pacifier.
Interesting! What is it about this binky that helps achieve that compared to others?
NUK pacifiers are well accepted by babies
We use NUK orthodontic pacifiers for our breastfed baby and they much prefer them to the philips avent one from the hospital
Even though she loves her Dr browns bottles, any pacifier with that nipple shape is an immediate no and gagging 😂
We use the Nuk orthodontic pacifiers, the ones that are neutral pastel colours.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Breast-like pacifier designs may promote better oral development and latch
Ninni co. 100%.
My baby struggled early on with a weak latch and this helped to strengthen his muscles to have a stronger latch.
It’s super flexible - it bends with pressure from their mouth so if their latch is poor, the paci folds.
Pacifiers provide soothing benefits and offer nipple relief
Fuck yeah paci. Gives my nipples a well deserved break.
Pacifier weight impacts effectiveness by affecting retention
Ours would take any but bibs was the easy favorite. And our favorite because it doesn't fall out.
It doesn't fall out?? Do tell more!
It doesn't fall out might be an overpromise 😆 what I mean is that out of the various brands we tried, the bibs ones seemed to have the perfect weight balance where it wasn't so heavy it fell out from the weight, and wasn't so light that it didn't stay in.
The tommy tippee ones were much lighter and she was able to keep them in and have a better sleep.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Thumb/finger sucking as an alternative soothing method
We can have the pacifier fairy come or something to take them away. You can’t take away their fingers.
Both mine picked their thumb instead so sometimes this doesn't end up being the benefit :'(
so we transitioned to a zippadeezip. He lost interest in his fingers.
I'm so afraid that's going to be our kid in 6 years 😭

Switching to orthodontic pacifiers at 6 months is common
Orthodontic pacifier? Hi Everyone, my sister-in-law who is a pediatrician told me that once baby has teeth (or 6 months) we are supposed to switch to an orthodontic pacifier (flatter shape) to prevent teeth coming in incorrectly.
I took him in at about 6 months old when he got his first tooth and the dentist showed me how his palate was super “arched” if that makes sense, because of sucking on the round pacifier.
For most of the big brands on the market, the pacifiers meant for 6 mo and older have the flattened shape (symmetrical or not).
Optimal pacifier weaning timing is a topic of debate
she was red in the face and absolutely screaming like a banshee.
I started putting her to sleep with a pacifier in her mouth and one in each hand, and bam no more grabby hand issues.
we went about a week without the pacifier and her sleep just got worse and worse. So we gave it back.
I’ve always heard either kick it by 3 months OR you’re stuck with it until at least 1 year.
Prolonged pacifier use and potential dental issues are debated
My 12 week old will only take the green Philips avent soothie ones.
We made the soother a bedroom only thing by 6 months with our babies.
Strong brand preference for Bibs pacifiers
Ours would only take Bibs. Nothing else.
Same!! She got bottles from birth of pumped milk but hated every pacifier except bibs.
4 breastfed babies and only found Bibs with my last. She's the only one who has ever taken a paci and it's so nice.
Second vote for exclusively BIBS! E we use their bottles also
Pacifier sizing differences are important for safety and durability
Often times it means they are different sizes! It’s really only necessary to upgrade if baby can shove the whole thing in their mouth.
It’s fine for a younger baby to use pacifiers rated for older babies, like you’re doing, but not vice versa.
Yes there is a reason for the ages on pacifiers. I have seen babies using the wrong size literally pull the entire pacifier into their mouth and then it is scary!!
Anyway at about five months old my son managed to bend it to put the whole thing in his mouth.... so took all those away and gave him firmer ones.
Pacifiers aid in sleep and help with SIDS prevention
My daughter doesn’t wake up when the pacifier falls out, she sucks on it to fall asleep, it falls out and she stays asleep.
I don't really see any downsides really. It's easier to wean than thumb suckers, helps prevent sids, we bottle feed so there's no boob to comfort, helps her sleep.
Weaning pacifier usage can be challenging
Same here, any ideas how to get them to sleep with out the pacifier?
If I had to do it over again I would not have given them a pacifier.
Appreciation for not having to wean pacifier use
Mine doesn’t take one either anymore, but I just think about the fact that we don’t have to wean from it!
I'm just glad I don't have to deal with weaning from yet another thing!

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Some babies reject pacifiers altogether
Which is great because he learnt to self soothe and we will never have to struggle with waking up to put a pacifier back in the mouth or getting them to stop taking it, or issies with how his tteeth could grow while using one.
I didn’t 😂 I tried on and off for a couple of weeks and just decided she didn’t like it.
My EBF baby actually never took to a pacifier.
Dental health concerns related to pacifier use are debated
Pacifiers, yes or no?
her teeth are CRAZY. Makes me wonder how often we blame pacifiers for teeth that would have been crooked anyways.
Look up a photo of a thumb suck open bite, and you’ll see why some of them are never able to be fixed, even with extensive surgeries and orthodontics.
with a thumb-sucker, you can’t just take it away like a pacifier.
Durability issues arise as toddlers chew through pacifiers
2 year old biting through pacifier
You just need to get rid of them at that point.
I had to give up on the dummy because my lil guy would shred one in a day!!!
We tried a few brands and found the latex dummies are super strong and last a really long time for us.
Pacifier nicknames often reference NUK
We say binky or sometimes paci, my mom says nuk
Not op but my mom says nuk bc of the brand when I was a baby
Nuk has pacifiers.
For sure!, I’m saying some people call all pacifiers NUKs, like we often call all tissues ‘kleenex’
Baby rejects pacifier use
The only pacifier he will accept is me.
My little girl fully gags every time we tried the pacifierp
Inconsistent pacifier acceptance timing
You say that until mine recently found a pacifier at 12 months and now it’s her favorite thing.
I'm getting rid of them ALLLL😂
