Many praise its construction, highlighting that it is rust-resistant when properly treated, and describe it as easy to load and unload, saying, "Holds plenty of weight but it's light enough to easily move around and stow when not in use." What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Affordable price for a cargo carrier
It’s on sale for $45. I might need it soon for an upcoming vacation trip.
It does the job just fine and you will not find one for a better price.
Decided to save some money and get the Maxxhaul rooftop basket!
Reliable for long trips
I used mine a few months ago on a 1500 mile round trip without a hitch (pun intended). Absolutely worth it.
Still going strong! I’ve taken it on and off the car a ton of times as well, so the bolts and wing nuts have held up well too.
Rust-proofing options available
and 2 years later there is no rust.
I got a cheap rack and rails from harbor freight and I got their rubberized undercoating spray.
I sprayed it with truck bed liner as well as all the joins and bolt locations covered it in black silicone.
High weight capacity of 500 lbs
Holds plenty of weight but it's light enough to easily move around and stow when not in use.
Solid construction during long-distance use
The carrier was solid, just had a little bit of a wiggle in the hitch that had to shim.
Easy to load and unload
I’ve had that HF carrier for a few years now. I throw my Ktm 200 (probably 230lbs) on it. I’ve never had any issues.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Potential rust if not treated
there are some rust spots which I have noticed, am guessing they will get covered and it will be fine.
Ricketiness and instability issues
Damn thing was so rickety it permanently bent putting the bike on it, and rocked and bounced all over with any movement.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Lack of posts about specific cargo carriers
I don't see a whole lot of posts about the actual cargo carrier that goes on the hitch (maybe this isn't so popular for those looking to stay stealthy), but I'm wondering if anyone can recommend cargo carriers.
Sharing experiences with similar products
Just bought the same rack, following along.
Preference for aluminum construction for weight savings
I’d definitely go aluminum if I were to do it again to save weight, and I prefer the driving experience towing a small trailer to having free floating weight hanging out back.
Discussion about weight limits for hitch carriers
Hitch cargo carrier with potted plants? I want to bring a fruit tree home (maybe like 4 or 5 ft tall) but would something like that be able to be secured on a hitch cargo carrier if it can’t fit inside?
Weight limit is in the manual, 160-ish lbs IIRC
The Model Y hitch can only take **160 lbs vertical weight** so subtract the weight of the carrier and make sure the tree with root ball is not too heavy.
No interference with the sunroof

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion about additional uses like bike carriers
I welded a hitch receiver to mine and add a bike carrier on the back when needed.
Discussion on DIY treatments for rust prevention
I finally decided to go the route of buying a cheaper, rust-prone product on amazon knowing I'd have to treat it to prevent rusting.
I just used some black gasket maker I had leftover from a project, but any sort of silicon should work just fine.
Discussion about additional uses like camping and road trips
USPS' long-awaited new mail truck makes its debut to rave reviews from carriers
Discussion about using hitch carriers for motorcycles
Have any of you got one? Any issues or alternative recommendations for the same or similar price?

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Discussions about weight limits and power consumption when using hitch racks
160 lbs (72kg) vertical weight limit per Tesla. That’s including the cargo box.
Consideration of alternatives like roof racks versus hitch carriers
You just can carry as much weight as a roof top carrier.
Comparisons to other brands like Harbor Freight and BlackWidow
I have the two bikes, 600lb version. I've had (2) Honda Groms on mine for almost 15,000 miles without any issue.
I had the single bike black widow and loved it. Carted my zx6r to track days really easily on the back of my Ram.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Concerns about blocking license plate visibility
how do you use a cargo carrier hitch even though it blocks your license plate?
I would just zip tie the plate the back of the rack.
I block my license plate all the time with a bike rack.
I had dmv send me a 2nd set of plates; the cargo carrier and bike rack have the same blocking issue.
Concerns about using on mountain roads
Makes sense, I'd much prefer to haul a small utility trailer but not sure I need quite that much space for the trip, also not really wanting to test it on some of the mountain roads I'll be going up and down etc
Concerns about rear visibility when using a hitch rack
Still seems like the best way to carry extra stuff when the car is full as the cargo carrier is in the area behind the car.
Good point about the charging space. Btw this should be used with the tow mode (to prevent the camera going crazy).
Suggestions for reflective tape for safety
Just get some 3m Scotchlite reflective tape.
