Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Insights on professional skate lacing techniques
I've never once laced a skate or a shoe to the top eyelet, I just find it uncomfortable.
They lace them loose during practices to increase their ankle strength, for games they lace them tighter for more support.
Personal anecdotes about skate tightening preferences
It sucked for a while but was definitely worth it.
I just don't feel steady.
The impact of skate stiffness on performance
I still lace my skates tight.
No way my boot is going anywhere haha.

Concerns about the high cost of youth hockey participation
it’s ridiculous how expensive it is and it kind of grosses me out thinking about how hard it is for kids to play this game.
Hes not wrong, especially now with all the hockey camps and trainers parents have to look into if they want to consider their kids even getting a whiff of being scouted.
Hockey players also tend to need a support system from family and friends that have independent transportation, can take time off work, and have flexible and lenient work hours.
If the inaccessibility of the sport bothers enough players, add it to the next CBA .. have the league AND players each donate a small percentage of revenue/salaries (0.0005% or 0.001%) to go towards making the sport more accessible for kids.
Discussion on the need for more specific skill groupings at hockey camps
he’s a fantastic coach with a plethora of knowledge however he really should invest in some other high level hockey players as assistant coaches
High cost of youth hockey participation
I was really pissed when he was traded, as I was too young to really understand the situation, all I knew was that PK Subban wasn't a hab anymore.
Challenges for novice skaters
Yikes
Can’t skate.
I just can’t skate worth shit.
Limited access to hockey facilities in some regions
we only have one ice rink in the entire country.
I've dreamt about playing hockey - once I scored two goals for the Canucks, including a goal that was eerily similar to the 2OT GWG Juice scored against the Sharks in 2011.
Advice for buying ice skates at local stores
Good store for buying ice skates Just started ice skatingaand plan on coming to the Kendall Sq rink regularly, as I live 5min away in Cambridge.
Are you looking for figure skates? If so, Home Ice at the Skating Club of Boston has a range from recreational/beginner to elite.
If it’s hockey skates you can try Pure Hockey in Braintree or Medford.
Ice house sports in Wellesley. I got a recommendation based on one of the skating instructors at Boston skating club.
Discussion on sock preferences for skates
Feet didn't get too cold despite being outside too!
Only thing I can think of are maybe it will stink them up more as the sweat is going directly to the skate instead of being absorbed.
Something feels weird about going barefoot in there.
The more sweat that your skates are in contact with, the more they'll break down, especially eyelets and rivets.
Discussion on the importance of skate fit for performance
While I was watching, it seemed like their skates were much, much looser on the ankle than mine.
Their skates are extremely stiff and custom made to their feet so they don't need to tie them very tight.
You should be able to skate with your laces lightly tied and obviously a bit more snug if you are playing in a game.
I also keep the top eyelet unlaced. If you tie the ankle too tightly, you limit the ability of your ankles to bend.
Discussion on skate sharpening preferences among NHL players
Crosby used to prefer a deeper hollow, but now uses a 1/2" hollow.
Ah gotcha, that's interesting. I've done his a few times in his hometown but again, probably doesn't really care what they are when he's going to a Sunday scrub skate.
I use a 5/8 because we have mostly novice or beginner skaters. For most hockey players I will change up to a 1/2 or 7/16 if they ask.
It really struck me that a lot of guys who thought they were "hot shit" kept telling me that a deeper cut was for "elite" players.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Negative experience with a specific staff member at Pure Hockey
Pure Hockey in medford, do NOT be helped by Eric.
Discussion on the popularity of hockey in Canada
26.5 million Canadians tuned into the gold medal final in men's hockey during the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Hockey is so popular in Canada among all groups, even the immigrant communities do commentary:
Comments on the 2010 gold medal game significance
I could not have gone better:
2010 was definitely an amazing hockey game, but it's not even close to the best hockey game for Team Canada in history
Personal anecdotes related to watching hockey
We were on our way home listening on the radio in the drive thru at Burger King when the golden goal was scored.
We had a school TV wheeled in to the theater to play the game so we could watch between scenes.
Discussion on women's hockey and skill comparison
Lady's gold was pretty great, too.
Concerns about control when skates are too loose
Do you not ever feel like you can't control your skate though? Anytime my skates been loose, I feel like I can't stop the boot from wiggling.
I do feel a bit more secure, if that makes sense, laced up all the way.
