Snoop's Take

Dr. Brown's Original Nipple Level 4 is a fast flow silicone nipple designed for babies 9 months and older. It aims to mimic the natural breast for a consistent, vacuum-free feeding experience while preserving nutrients and reducing colic symptoms. Consumer feedback is a cacophony of both praise and frustration. While some users note that “it seems to be helping and she’s been getting a couple more ounces per day out of it,” others lament issues like oversized nipples, leaks and even instances of choking. The debate rages on in a sardonic tone, with comments such as “Creates such a mess!” highlighting the product’s divisive nature. In summary, while the product boasts innovative anti-colic design and consistent flow rate, the overwhelming negativity in user reviews makes it a contentious choice in its category. Experts recommend cautious consideration depending on your baby’s specific feeding dynamics.

Positive Feedback

the Dr. Browns nipple is so big and the milk spills into her mouth too much.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Adjustable nipple flow improves feeding efficiency
If your baby is taking a long time to eat and is getting frustrated, it might be worth trying, but expect there to be a transition while they learn to eat with the new flow.
It seems to be helping and she’s been getting a couple more ounces per day out of it.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Nipple size is too big, causing excess milk spill
the Dr. Browns nipple is so big and the milk spills into her mouth too much.
Drip flow design leads to overly fast feeding and mess
He drank 35ml in flat 10minutes which has never happened with Phillips avent.
I do like that the avent nipples don’t drip unless being sucked on.
Creates such a mess!
Bottle leaking issues
I’m so over it.
Even if everything is perfect the bottle would leak for us.
I think a 4 would be too much for her!
So frustrating!
Nipple flow too slow
The nipple flow may be too slow, Philips Avent nipples don't flow on their own, the baby has to actively suck to get milk.
Yeah I'm not a fan of those bottles for that reason.
Nipple flow too fast causing choking
HELP!! I’m using the Dr. Brown’s Nipples and they’re suddenly flowing way too fast and my newborn is choking.
You could try the premie nipples!
We still use the preemie nipples (wide neck!) for our 6 month old! Any flow higher totally floods her.
My lactation consultant told me to use preemie nipples, the flow matches that of a breast slightly better.
Poor performance of natural flow nipple variant
the natural flow (with the white/blue inserts) are absolutely shit.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Nipple size guidelines are flexible and subjective based on baby’s feeding habits
The ranges on the package are just a suggestion.
That said…I think you should do what works for your baby and if he’s able to handle size 2, give him size 2!
she has a very gentle suck and wasn’t finishing her bottles before getting exhausted and falling asleep.
the age on the package is just the suggestion and not the standard.
Paced feeding technique may alleviate fast flow choking
We quickly tried this method and have not had issues since.
Match nipple type to corresponding bottle
Dr. Brown's bottles mimic the breast the least, so they might not be the best choice if you're also breastfeeding.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Dr. Brown bottle systems are seen as overcomplicated with too many parts
the amount of parts and washing … our baby was very colicky too so I felt like I had no choice.
so many parts and crap and they are now leaking !
Over-designed, too many parts, assembly is a nightmare when your newborn is screeching in your ear at 5am.
Confusing and overcomplicated bottle design
I think it’s incredible that Dr Browns has convinced a whole generation of parents to use their bottles and think they’re the best without having any clear idea what those green parts inside actually do.
I opened the box and said "wtf is this" and opened the instruction pamphlet and found they were optional so I put them aside.
MAM bottle have a rubber thing in the bottom with air holes which helps!
Humorous take on leaking issues
I use Dr. Brown's, and the only thing that leaks is the baby.
Nipple color changes observed
It's an evolutionary thing for nipples to get darker.
I'm actually sad about this.
