Snoop's Take

The ASUS RT-AX1800S is a dual band WiFi 6 router designed to streamline your home network with high-speed internet and extended coverage. It supports advanced technologies such as MU-MIMO, OFDMA, and 1024-QAM to manage multiple devices effortlessly and securely through features like AiProtection Classic and built-in VPN. User chatter around this router is notably reserved, with only subtle nods to its performance. While detailed testimonials were scarce, one quoted remark - “it fit perfectly in my desk” - underscores the practical deployment seen by users. The overall discussion hints at reliable everyday performance without hyperbolic claims or glaring issues, keeping the tone pleasantly measured. In essence, feedback suggests that while not revolutionary, the router does what it promises with understated competence. In conclusion, the ASUS RT-AX1800S is recommended for users seeking a cost-effective upgrade into WiFi 6 territory, though its performance may align more with everyday usage than cutting-edge experimentation.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Mesh node setup considerations and design choices
I would probably go for the more compact RP-AX58 (less/no wires and all).
I believe in ASUS. They’ve always outperformed their asking price.
Bonus hardware features such as extra LAN ports appreciated
this having 2.5 LAN ports is a bonus
US brand trust and performance edge in higher spec routers
Not only is Asus a more reputable premium brand, but it supports "AXE7800" while Archer AXE75 only supports "AXE5400".
ASUS, without a doubt, for so many reasons, software better, firmware better, reliability better, speeds better.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
ESP8266 Device Disconnection Workaround
I had disconnect issues with esp8266 devices.
I've got about 20 esp8266 and esp32 they do drop off network periodically still but reconnect quickly.
Limited VLAN support in ASUS routers with suggested workarounds
Profit.
most consumer grade gear does not support VLAN's.
the Guest network gets a different IP subnet and appears to have a VLAN tag.
Asus lists the routers that support vlans here: https://www.asus.com/us/support/faq/1049415/

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

Debate on upgrading older WiFi 6 routers versus current performance needs
Wifi 6E is a thing that exists but it's not worth buying a whole new router imo.
Exactly this, the speed differences are negligible.
Most devices absolutely can get over 500 on WiFi.
I'm still using WiFi 5 APs, and don't feel any need to change them as they are still way more than enough to cover my WiFi needs.
Debate on upgrading when current router works
If not, there's not much reason to spend on anything new unless there is some specific issue you are trying to solve.
If you are in a house with loads of devices and/or in a flat dense building then it will definitely provide a noticeable improvement in speed and connectivity.
Price-performance tradeoff considerations in router selection
would it be a significant difference that you would dish out an extra $200?

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Concurrent Connections Limitations
you will never see it on your phone/laptop/table as its constantly talking and will just get back on seemlessly due to that constant traffic.
this could be it. Unfortunately google did not help me find the concurrent connection limit for my router.
Best I can find talks about 30ish, asus doesn't seem to be publishing it for that router. Very annoying.
Would a separate ubiquity acces point solve this issue?
Firmware and Software Instability and Alternative Firmware Solutions
Is it just me or do Asus Routers have buggy software? It has left quite a sour experience.
I like the ASUS’s firmware because you can do many things with it unlike other consumer (cheap) brands.
I highly recommend Fresh Tomato.
Is the performance better?
Port Forwarding and WAN IP Configuration Issues
Nothing seems to work, even enabling DMZ.
Thanks to u/I_Am_The_Reign I have managed to resolve the issue.
I found that if I did this, my port forwarding worked for my grandson's MindCraft setup.
Make sure that it is being assigned a valid public IP address on the WAN (Internet) side.
Privacy Concerns and Trend Micro Data Collection
I'm just surprised that all the glowing reviews completely overlook or gloss over this piece of spyware.
Before you make a switch to another brand, just use the AX82U without those settings enabled and see how good the router is at what it is designed to do, it is a great router.
I paid for those features and I would like to be able to use them without giving away my personal data.
You don't need them.
HomePod Mini Connectivity Issues
After lots of aspirin, coffee and experimentation I think I've got it stable.
I literally just created a guest SSID exclusively for HomeKit devices.
I wish I’d had this as a resource when I was working out how to make everything work!
Thank you so much for sharing this!
WiFi connectivity and channel issues affecting multimedia devices
Very frustrating.
The signal seems to be weak though when it shouldn't be.
Best to pick a channel that won't overlap with another.
I've used it, it helped me find the best channel for some of my wifi devices.
Stability concerns in router performance
So in my opinion not worth it as in just a year max 2 you will get 3-500 routers with better and more stable implementations of wifi 7.
This unit is great but drops connection every 24-36hrs.
Stability concerns in WiFi 7 routers
Quite a few bad reviews of it, showing it having a issue with one CPU core at 100% causing stability issues and rebooting.
Connectivity limitations in mesh node setups
Power line adapters works well for some and worse for others.
Unfortunately only one coax port which is Next to the router.
