Discussion about kayak loading techniques
This Exposed Racks carrier/basket was designed with a side notch to assist with loading and it works damn well! The edge of the notch is wrapped with a material that helps the kayak slide easier too.
Zero chance my 5’2” self will be putting my 17 yo composite sea kayak on a rack like that though.
This seems like a far more complicated way of loading a kayak than just either sliding it on from the back or lifting it up on its side & putting it on.
Been schlepping my yak on to my Jeep like a circus act.
Discussion about different kayak loading techniques
What technique is everyone using to load their bigger kayaks onto roof racks? Currently I have a smaller 26kg (58lbs) kayak that I just grab the handles which are conveniently situated at the centre of mass, manhandle it into a shoulder press and yeet it upside down on the racks on my ute (truck/bakkie) which are above my head.
I just put a carpeted bathmat on the rear roof of my Escape and set the bow on the mat and lift and push my ss127 onto the roof rack that way.
Same; and if your car doesn't have those metal side rails that won't get scratched, this guy does the same technique but uses the cam strap tensioned between the edge of the two crossbars to keep the kayak off the roof paint.
I’ve got a roller that suction cups to back of my car and use that to get up top.

brand isn't really a major factor: most brands at this level are at least decent
Hull design is 1000x more important than brand
consider your life vest as “critical gear” and prepare to spend real money if you necessary to get one that fits good on your body in your cockpit
