Melamine sponges may scratch glass
Do not use these. I made the mistake once and found that melamine sponges make microscopic scratches on the glass.
Potential misinformation about safety on glass
It is absolutely safe to use in an aquarium and on glass, it is the standard used at fish stores and aquariums and has been for a long time.
these will not scratch glass like someone on here said- it’s just an abrasive foam and won’t scratch anything unless you get a piece of sand between the sponge and foam.
Potential damage to glass if not used carefully
Just make sure there's no substrate between the glass and the scrubber. This could damage your glass real bad.

Recommendations for alternative algae eaters
My favorite to recommend to customers who come in asking for a algae eater / pleco would be the otocinclus but there are small pleco species also like clowns, rubber lips, and my favorite the bristlenose.
Discussion about algae management without chemicals
What can I use to get rid of this algae that won’t harm my snails?
You can do this without chemicals, you just need to be diligent about cleaning and blocking out the light.
Introduce some beneficial bacteria to out compete the algae and preform frequent water changes.
Don't use chemicals. A lot of times they fix the algae but throw things out of whack.
Casual comments about managing multiple tanks
get some salvinia or another floater to help maintain the nitrates
Lmaoo I need to make some major life changes because one of my 4 tanks has an algae bloom? Sheesh better reformulate my existence 😂😂😂

They get aggressive when they get bigger.
Concerns about tank maintenance and water quality
Algae blooms are a sign of a poorly balanced tank.
Generally weekly water changes keeps everything good so I don’t usually have to test my tanks.
But the reality is, there's a balance and it's important and it took me forever to figure that out lol.
Tips for improving tank conditions
but i'd definately start with a very thorough clean
agitate the substrate so that the dirt floats up so you can siphon it out
Advice on algae cleaning methods
Advice needed! I’ve gotten algae growing on the glass and it’s hard to clean with a scraper.
If it’s the hard to scrape off algae (spot) - otos, hill streams and SAE’s won’t really clean it.
Less light, maybe get an aquarium razor glass scraper for immediate cleaning.
Get a nerite snail. They love that stuff.
Discussion about factors contributing to algae growth
Sounds like maybe green spot algae?
Try to cut down on the amount of light.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion about the risks of using chemicals in small tanks.
Adding chemicals directly to a tank should always be a last resort.
Discussion on using magnets causing scratches
The FIRST pull with a reputable magnetic scraper left a deep scratch across the full length of the tank.
Concerns about Aqueon tank quality and leaks
Don't buy Aqueon tanks. Woke up to find my 40g Aqueon breeder had drained out onto the apartment floor.
Bought a 65 gallon Aqueon 5 years ago, moved it in the back of a u-haul halfway across the country three times and its still holding water.
I can’t imagine the overhead for selling aquariums is *that* high.
Personal experiences with aggressive behavior of Golden Algae Eaters
Agree, they are at job for 24x7.
Snails destroy my small plants.
Discussion on challenges of bubble algae removal
How do I get rid of bubble algae? Already tried emerald crabs, and my sea urchin won't eat it either.
Manual removal, emerald crabs, rabbit fish
Reef Flux dosed at a 4x level will kill it. Manually remove as much as you can first. But you do ha
Bubble algae are extremely resilient. They can thrive in low or high nutrient/lighting systems and once they take off, it’ll be hard for any one predator to eradicate them.
Mixed opinions on magnetic cleaners
Literally not even worth using.
